You want to talk graphic storytelling that’s compressed but effective? These nine panels from the front and back covers of The Phantom #1 (Gold Key, 1962) tell a reader everything they need to know to dive in and enjoy Lee Falk’s great adventure character. Starting out in daily newspaper strips, Falk did not screw around. His Phantom stories were economical, moved at a good clip but never feel rushed. That’s not as easy as it looks.
