A backstory is one of the essential parts of a character. It dictates the character’s mindset, place in the world and their subsequent arc throughout a story. A character’s backstory is the key for opening the vault of character options, ideas and journeys. The reason for this principle is due to cause and effect. It is the answer for why your characters act and think a certain way. For example, Bruce Wayne doesn’t become Batman just because he wants to. He becomes Batman because of his parents death. He wants to make sure that no other child in Gotham will suffer the same traumatic event he did, so he then becomes Batman. This character is an excellent example of using backstory in writing since it uses the cause and effect method.

What is Backstory

As I said before, backstory should be about explaining how your character got into their specific state at the beginning of the story. It is merely answering the subconscious questions in a reader’s mind. Why are they acting like this? Why do they want this goal? How did they get to that specific mindset? It is a device to give a character history, so it is not like they appear out of nowhere for this particular story, but rather, they were a person all along. This principle makes a character a real person with depth and breadth.

Why is Backstory Important

Backstory is one of the key features of any character, and it should not be ignored. Backstory does not need to complicated but rather a simple explanation. A character might be struggling with parenthood. Their backstory is that they had a rough childhood that damaged the way they seek familial relationships. There. Done. All backstory needs to do is show how a character’s past has shaped their present. Not only this but backstory paves the road for character development. Backstory can provide the lie your character believes or the moral belief that holds them back from being the best that they can be. It will give you the foundations and beginnings of character development.

How to Communicate Backstory

Since backstory is events that take place in the past and not directly in the narrative, it is sometimes hard to tell your audience about it without having lengthy exposition. It is crucial to make sure that backstory isn’t revealed without context. It would make no sense for a character to start monologuing about how his parents died, and how he must avenge them when he is eating breakfast. Moreover, by pacing the release of your character’s backstory, it gives them more mystery and suspense. There are several different ways to communicate backstory while keeping suspense. You can use diary entries to communicate backstory. This concept usually has a story in a story principal and shows readers a deeper, more raw version of a character. Another way you can communicate backstory is through flashbacks or dream sequences. It is important that these sequences don’t come out of anywhere but have a believable trigger. For example, if a character is in a situation which has a similarity in their backstory, you would explore that.

Title: The Weakness of a Strength Summary: First Shiro went missing. And no matter how desperately Keith searches he can’t find the only family member he has left. Shiro could be being tortured, forced to fight, he could be dead and Keith has no idea and it terrifies him. And if that wasn’t enough, now his luxite blade, the only thing he has left of his parents, has been stolen. He has to get it back. He can’t lose it too. He finds an unexpected ally in Lance, who insists on joining him in this second just as desperate search that takes them straight into the one of the most dangerous, deadly places in the universe. And Keith discovers that although this quest started with searching for his knife he may have found something even more important along the way. That is, if he doesn’t lose it first. Title: Crimson Promises Summary:  There’s blood everywhere except where it should be, which is inside Lance. All Hunk can do is hold him as he shivers, respond to his confused, pained breathless words and pray that help arrives soon. Rating: G Other relationships: Allurance

No one thought anything of such particular wording. They should have. Because now the natives are hunting Shiro’s party consisting of himself, Lance and Keith with the ultimate goal to turn Lance into the image of one of their revered Altean gods. And as if running through a jungle planet with no supplies and no way off wasn’t hard enough, now Lance is sick, burning up with a fever they have no way to combat. Title: Rows of Stitches, Lines of Pain Summary:  Lines had been drawn all over the slender body. Dotted. Solid. Red. Black, blue, white, green stains against tan flesh. Others were made of stitches, of dried blood, of pain, and why had it taken them so long to find him? All of the lines sectioned off his body like some sort of science experiment, some, some thing to be studied, dissected. Title: Inches From Death Summary:  Being captured by the Galra is a lot less frightening than Pidge thought it would be. It’s boring, really. Title: Despair In Your Veins Summary:  Being a Paladin of Voltron offers certain allowances and opportunities that the average person is not privy to. So when he’s invited to accompany the two geniuses on a resource gathering mission he couldn’t be happier and plans to make the best of it. And then everything goes wrong. They’re trapped, injured, and if blood loss doesn’t get Lance first then suffocation definitely will. They need a plan but Hunk is down for the count and Lance knows he’s no good for coming up with something of that caliber. But his team needs him and he’s got to think of something. Spider-Man Master List

I’m almost at the 1-year anniversary of my first Spider-Man sickfic/whumpfic, so I thought I’d make a new master list to see how far I’ve come! All except for fic numbers 1, 31, and 32 are prompts that were sent to me! (Bolded are my favorites!) 

1. this one here is my very first and it has Ned slipping up to Stark Tower to talk to Tony bc Peter’s sick and won’t listen to him. Cue Tony doing work like the dad he is 

2. this one has Peter sick and trying to hide it from Tony but he fails and Tony takes him back to the tower and to med-bay

3. this one has Peter diving into an icy river during a solo battle because he thought it would be a good idea for a sneak attack. he thought wrong 

4. this one has Peter getting stabbed during battle and the Tonester has a device that alerts him when this happens and he has to suit up and go to the rescue 

5. this one has Peter rolling up to a meeting even though he’s sick, and he ends up throwing up during the meeting. poor dude 

6. this one has Peter telling Tony that he wasn’t hurt from battle but then he falls and surprise surprise– he did get hurt, much to his and Tony’s surprise 

7. this one has Peter having to ask Tony for some ibuprofen, more than once bc Tony’s mind is elsewhere. (Note: this is one of my favorites, and I couldn’t tell you why.)

8. this one has awkward dad Tony not knowing what to do when he finds out Peter is sick after the kid starts crying from being frustrated 

9. so this one has Peter staying overnight at Stark Tower and he ends up getting sick and has to go to Tony for help 

10. this one right here as Peter getting sick while spending the night with Steve and Bucky for the first time (ft. Stucky)

11. this bad boy right here has Peter taking an unplanned dip in the Hudson and getting really really sick from it– so much that unofficial dad has to pick him up from school (Note: another favorite)

12. this one has Peter popping one too many ibuprofen pills and Tony thinks the kid’s gotten into drugs 

13. this one has Peter stopping by Steve and Bucky’s apartment during a nightly patrol, and whoops, he’s sick– enough to have Steve and Bucky stepping up like the doting uncles they are 

14. this one has Peter acting a little strange and Sam’s like ‘what the hell is wrong with you kid?’ but then he realizes that the kid has a fever 

15. this one has Tony and Steve low-key disagreeing on how to take care of a sick Peter 

16. this one is a mix up! Peter saves Tony for once instead of Tony saving Peter 

17. this one here is a little drabble with Peter getting injured and Tony’s there to dad his way through life like usual 

18. this one here has a miserably sick Peter and Ned comes through for ya boy

19. this one is another mix-up! Ned’s sick and Peter forgoes his patrol to help take care of him

look I know this is sappy and cheesy but u know when a character loses control of their power or they’re possessed or w/e and their s/o shouts their name running towards them and then they stop their rampage and let their s/o hug them,, like that’s good shit
