April May: a fan backstory.

Ah yes. This is my attempt to make an one-off character who showed up once in the entire series and never appeared again an actually likeable character. And yes, I know there are one-off characters who are actually likeable, but its cause they at least have a personality.

April May doesn't. She's just horny bait. And despite the fact that I hate pink, her design is pretty okay. So I decided to make her at least a bit more likeable by giving her a minimally decent backstory.

So let's start with the fact that she's pretty young, like, college age. I feel like she'd be interested in fashion and modeling. And to help her pay the college rent, she sent out numerous job applications. She has quite a few talents, namely her singing and sewing, but her most notorious trait is her charisma. I don't think she is that flirty by nature, it's probably just a persona she created so she could lure men into doing whatever she wanted, but honestly, I don't think she created that persona purely because she wanted to. Prior to her job at Bluecorp, I think she was mostly herself, with some flirty comments here and there but not in abundance. She was pretty kind and chill. There was no pressure into being a flirty character at all times.

And then she was called to a job interview, and accepted as a secretary at Bluecorp. She was tricked into thinking it was a "detective agency of sorts", and during her first days, her job was pretty normal. But then, the company's true colors started revealing to her. Until one day, where she was personally called to the CEO's office, and could finally meet her boss in person.

He answered all of her questions with that bright smile and loud voice of his, which we're all familiar with, and he explained that Bluecorp was, in fact, a blackmail company. She attempted to fire herself, but now that she knew the truth, there was no way back. They already knew everything about her, and if she attempted to reveal everything to the police, all of her personal information would be leaked. She had no choice but to stay, forever a subordinate to Redd White.

He knew that her physical appearance could deceive many people into trusting their company, so he forced her to create a persona, the flirty and charming persona we all know. From there, she was never able to be herself anymore. They absued of her beauty and natural charisma to lure more victims into their company, and she couldn't do anything about it but oblige.

When the Mia Fey case happened, she felt bad for the murder of an innocent woman and having to accuse her younger sister of a crime she didn't commit, but worse of all, the was being obligated to commit a crime herself. We all know what happened there. When Phoenix exposed her crime of wiretapping, she exploded, and got super mad at him, to the point of refusing to tell him anything even in prison.

But to be honest... I don't necessarily think she was just mad at him. She was also... scared. Scared for both Phoenix of herself. Scared of her boss, who she now knee was capable of even murder. Even if she was already in prison, she was scared of what could happen to her. She was scared for Phoenix and what could happen to him, because her boss wasn't really just any opponent. And when she saw him in the detention center that night, she couldn't say she was surprised. She knew that would happen.

What she didn't expect to happen was for him to not only defend himself, but also finally expose her boss' true self. For him and that woman to expose every single one of his crimes. Redd White was finally taken down. And even though she was in prison, she finally felt free. She could be herself again, she no longer hated Phoenix, as he was the one resposible for making White finally confess. Now, I don't think she would have a very long sentence for perjury and wiretapping, so in probably less than 10 years she would finally be released from jail.

And speaking of that, since Redd White was much more dangerous and his crime list was enormous, he was sent to a different penitentiary, one with much higher security, so she wouldn't have to deal with him during her time in jail.

I assume by the time of Spirit of in 2028, she would have been released already. I think she would either have a modeling agency or would work in a fancy clothes shop, following her previous dreams of studying fashion and/or being a model.

+ BONUS: Relationship with Mimi Miney

Personally one of my favorite F/F Ace Attorney couples. They have so much in common. They both had shitty bosses, they both attempted to frame Maya Fey (lol), and headcanon wise, they both had a tragic past and regretted their actions. And recently, I saw an official artwork of April as a nurse (and incredibly enough, it wasn't even all that sexualized, she looked like a normal nurse) and as we all know, Mimi is a former nurse. Even though Mimi's crimes were much more severe and their relationship is doomed to fail, they can at least give it a try. After all, most of my OTPs are doomed couples anyways :')

And they make the lesbian flag together.

”getting thicker skin” is great in theory but I think for some people “get better at handling your thin skin” is gonna be way more helpful advice. I have strong emotional reactions to criticism and they might never go away, but i can continue to try and handle each situation maturely and that’s the important part. Sometimes irrational feelings are chronic and living with them is better than trying to beat yourself up into not having them.

Manfred Von Karma did not burn Phoenix's letters to Miles.

Like, I'm not even saying this to defend Manfred's character (though the fanbase does get a little crazy with what he actually did and didn't do) I'm saying this because that's not canon. I'm not sure it was even possible in canon.

Phoenix didn't write letters to Germany. He didn't know Miles was in Germany, let alone Von Karma's address. He didn't even know who Von Karma was until Edgeworth told him about Manfred in Turnabout Goodbyes.

In the game canon, Miles just stopped showing up to school one day. All Phoenix seemed to know was that he transferred schools suddenly. He didn't know why or where to. Remember, Phoenix didn't even hear about DL-6 until Turnabout Sisters when Maya mentioned her family's involvement.

Even in the anime canon (I haven't watched the anime in a while so I might be off about this) where Phoenix and Miles get a chance to properly say goodbye, Phoenix still doesn't have a direct means of contacting him. His best way of doing so was dedicating a song through the radio using Signal Samurai codenames and hoping Miles would hear it.

Phoenix mentions trying to contact him several times when explaining their relationship to Maya, but this was after finding out Miles was this "Demon Attorney". Miles would have to be at least 20 at this point in time, living back in California with at least a few trials under his belt. With how young he reached success, it's not impossible Miles was living on his own at the time. Even if he wasn't, I doubt Manfred was going through this grown adult's mail.

No, what the game seems to be implying is that Miles ignored Phoenix. (Maya even says, "I guess he didn't want to hear from his old friends.") And I don't think this was out of hatred or anything, I think Miles just wanted to forget his past entirely because even the good memories of his childhood would be bittersweet at best.

And to be honest that makes it even more tragic to me. Why do we need Manfred to intercept their connection when Miles' trauma and guilt complex is already doing that?

I like to think Miles knew Phoenix would be asking questions if he ever responded to those initial attempts at contact. Questions he of course doesn't want to answer because they'd at best open old wounds or at worst risk his childhood friend finding out he might have committed patricide.

I also like to think he knew Phoenix of all people would stubbornly try to find the answers Miles wouldn't willingly give because he literally mentions Phoenix always being "single minded in his work" and "always seeing things through to the end". If anyone was going to press and bring those uncomfortable and painful memories out in the open for the sake of "helping him", it would be Phoenix Wright.

Why do we need Manfred to take away all that complexity and tragedy? That is such a waste!

fanon rant.

i love fanon concepts but i hate how much they antagonize manfred.

phoenix tried to contact miles via letters, but he never responded? that's actually extremely interesting! the reason he didn't respond was because manfred had burnt letters phoenix sent? nowhere close to what happened in canon text.

franziska taught miles all the ropes of being a von karma, had him follow in her footsteps steps, and helped him fit in with the family? YES!!! I LOVE THAT!!! franziska did this because she knew miles wouldn't have survived the "abuse" from manfred otherwise? now you're just reaching.

miles became a prosecutor following his father's death because he felt betrayed by the system? that's actually canon! manfred was the main reason for this change and had groomed miles into believing all defense attorneys are untrustworthy and did this as a final "fuck you" to gregory? he literally has nothing to gain from that.

fanon concepts have great potential, especially when they build on canon, but i hate when they wildly reach at things that don't exist. headcanons are supposed to build on canon, and if not, acting like they are canon is just weird.

NO HATE TO THOSE WHO ENJOY THESE FANON CONCEPTS!!! NO HATE TO ABUSIVE MANFRED ENJOYERS!!! but you HAVE to understand that the headcanons and fanon you enjoy is simply that: a headcanon and fanon.

you are allowed to enjoy whatever you want, i just don't like being driven out of fandom spaces (which actually happened recently) because i don't think manfred von karma is a villain for things he didn't do.

manfred is a villain, there is no ignoring that, but he's a villain for murdering two innocent men, tasing two innocent people, and participating in the toxicity of the justice system, not because of fanon.

i don't want to start controversy, which is something i cannot believe i'm saying when im simply expressing an opinion, but i just felt really annoyed at it this morning. if you want to tell me why i'm "wrong" please do it respectfully, otherwise i'm not going to hear you out. i'm not here to change the minds of anyone who enjoys these concepts, i am just pointing out inconsistencies with these concepts and canon.

I'm on case 3 in Investigations and god I am LOVING the new characters, I fell in love with Kay Faraday and Shi-Long Lang INSTANTLY!! Kay is so silly and cheeky and Lang is such an idiot and an asshat and hot-

It's pretty sad to know that Larry's talents aren't recognized enough. Like in the first game he made 2 heavy clocks shaped like The Thinker statue and claims to have voiced it all by himself. In this manga (although not canon, im pretty sure) he quickly built a small robot toy who can fly with small props.

I know he's the comic relief and is clowned on a lot, but he really deserves more credit for his skills with handicraft. He's got talent lemme tell you.

Ayumu Kei (Age: 28)

Ayumu Kei is a policeman working for the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department). He has been a frequent crime scene investigator through numerous cases for 5 years and has a strong vendetta against serial killers. Though Ayumu has been at various crime scenes, he's still been noticeably uncomfortable when present.

Ayumu sometimes accompanies Dick Gumshoe, who he had met months prior to becoming a police officer. They seem to be in pretty good terms, even calling eachother nicknames.

I have a LOT in store for him, so i hope you guys are really interested in this little fellow :]

I was playing through PA:AA Trials and Tribulations, and I just realized that no one talks about Recipe for Turnabout.

Why? How can no one in this fandom not go bat shit insane for Phony Phoenix? I mean look at this man

He’s bat chit insane. The madlad is literally an anti-Phoenix. He calls himself the Tiger. He growls at the jury. He’s so scary the Judge hides under his desk.

HE MAKES A FAKE ATTORNEY BADGE OUT OF CARDBOARD AND PRETENDS TO BE PHOENIX IN!!! COURT!!!!!!

AND NOBODY SAYS ANYTHING!

Gumshoe, the Judge, Maggey, AND EVEN MAYA don’t register that its NOT PHOENIX.

He’s constantly screaming. He’s growling. He tells Phoenix that for every dumb question he asks he’s gonna sue him $50,000.

HE’S BRIGHT. FUCKING. RED.

I refuse to acgnowledge this Furio Tigre erasure. That case was a fucking wild ride. That man impersonated the most popular defense attorney and almost got away with it, and it was heavily implied that he was dating the granddaughter of the

HEAD OF THE GODDAMN MAFIA.

Did I mention he roars like a tiger? I don’t think you understand. This man has AUDIO DIALOGUE THAT PLAYS EVERY TIME HE ROARS. EVEN PHOENIX HIDES UNDER HIS DESK FROM HIM.

And then lets step away from fuckin Tiger Phoenix for a minute.

We ALSO learn that Gumshoe is SUPER SOFT for Maggey Bryde. She gets arrested for supposedly being the murderer, and Gumshoe is in HYSTERICS. He runs around like a lost puppy doing everything he can to get Maggey out with the same if not more panic than he had when Edgeworth was arrested. AND ITS SO??? WHOLESOME?????

Like he’s SO CUTE TOO. He makes Maggey lunches, because he notices she’s been loosing weight and doesn’t want her to be unhealthy. When he understands that Maggey is mad at him because of a misunderstanding, he avoids her because she says she doesn’t want to see him, and he doesn’t want to push himself onto her.

HE’S SUCH A GENTLEMAN?? WHY DO I NOT SEE MORE MAGGEY AND GUMSHOE SHIP ART.

Not only that, but they have PERFECT ENERGY TOGETHER. They’re both like energetic dogs you can rely on. They’re excited, and they’re here to do their best. They can do no wrong.

Also, Gumshoe and Maggey LOVE the same foods and it’s adorable. You can’t change my mind; straight ships can be adorable too I’m literally a gay man call me homophobic I dare you.

So little miss is the granddaughter of a fucking MOB BOSS and she is literally true crime. Constantly mutters about offering you tea. Would be a nice gesture if the murder in this case WASNT CAUSED BY SOMEONE BEING POISONED THROUGH A DRINK also the fact that the MURDERER IS HER BOSS

She’s actually pretty chill, despite how off-putting she is. Would love to listen to true crime and watch the Twilight Zone with her. She deserves better.
