my biggest issue with the httyd live action-and just about any live action reboot is that it seems that the live action adaptations are being made to make the original “better”? like, so many people talk about a live action spiderverse, a live action hercules, a live action PRINCE OF EGYPT (dont piss me OFF.)-like animation is a beautiful work of art, and for some reason putting real people and cgi in it is supposed to be an “upgrade”? im probably being that friend that’s too woke or whatever, but i just think it’s so disrespectful to act like something that takes so much time and effort and energy is immediately considered as lower because it is animated. animation is beautiful, and it is one of the most heartfelt art forms there are, and erasing that for the sake of a cash grab is downright degrading to animation as a medium.

You might have seen the cover art I sketched for @plothooksinc's fic Infinite Ricochet a couple days ago. I wanted to clean it up a bit, so here's a more refined version 😄

There was actually one more draft I did between the first and this final one, in which I tried a tighter composition and pushed the perspective more. It lost some of the eerie atmosphere though, so I wasn't as happy with it. You can check it out under read more, if you're curious!

A page of sketches of Leo. He has no pupils, a large shell with a sloping bridge made up of rectangular scutes, large blocky limbs, and a slightly longer dino-like neck. There is a three part turnaround and several bust expressions. there are also a few character poses like crouching with a sword, stretching his wrists, crawling in a vent, back flipping, pointing accusingly, meditating, inspecting the ground, and leaning against a pole with his head down like the dramatic teen he is.

A page of sketches of all of the brothers. There are full body drawings of Raph, Donnie, and Mikey. Raph is bulkier with short tattered mask tails, Donnie is lithe with long squared off mask tails, and Mikey is shortest with bowlike mask tails. There is a bust of all of them together talking, where Leo's mask tails are long and tapered. there are expressions of each of them. Donnie reads a book with small glasses, Mikey points towards himself and says "I came, I saw, I kicked butt!", Raph snarls, Mikey sits back with arms and legs crossed smugly, Donnie pulls his goggles away from his face looking serious, Raph pushes Mikey's head down in reprimand, Raph looks surprised saying "What the shell?", Mikey shakes Donnie by the shoulders asking "is it done?" while Donnie looked annoyed and says "Mikey, shaking me is not going to get it 'done' any faster."

Sketches of the brothers in their gear. Donnie has glasses, gloves, and pads for his feet and knees, with a duffle slung over his shoulder and goggles on his neck. He holds his bo. Leo has athletic wraps along his arms and legs and a harness for his swords on his back and chest. He holds his swords. Raph has elbow and shin guards with boxer wraps on his hands and a pack strapped to his thigh. He punches his fist. Mikey has headphones and a Walkman, with knee pads and an assortment of pouches on his belt. He hold his nunchucks. Below are a few sketches of Leo lying dramatically on the floor, prone, supine and sideways. The way his neck and arms have to tilt backwards when he's on his back looks uncomfortable. There is another sketch of Mikey listening to music, curled up and looking put out.

So I was inspired while rewatching TMNT ‘03…

Thought I’d give a try at doing my own take on a mutant turtle design, combining the elements of each iteration that I’ve seen with some more animalistic turtle traits. Hope they look alright! The turtles themselves are the 2003 ones, I always thought it was a little odd they had no bridge on their shells. I did keep the three fingered hand in later sketches tho!

Poor 2003 Leo. Guy can never catch a break.
