i have a little thing i've been working on, it's a rottmnt x dinos au thingy!! i got some concept designs for the turtles so here they are

it's still in heavy development but i thought i'd share! i love them dearly grrr

also mandatory apology: i messed raph up big time and i'm so so sorry about that ueueueue

and some FUN FACTS!!

Raph n Mikey like to occasionally bump their heads together as a kind of love language

Leo takes great pride in his feathers and sometimes grooms them for hours until they're "perfect"

Donnie had an accident as a tot, hence resulting in a bare back where his feathers cannot regrow (he's very insecure about it)

Sometimes Raph accidentally knocks things over with his tail cuz he's very clumsy with it (it's okay tho)

When upset, Mikey tends to hit his head against a wall in his room to blow off steam (said wall has several cracks in it)

also another neat detail!

Raph, Mikey and Leo all have beaks, only Donnie doesn't

because softshell turtles don't have beaks either!! see what i did there?? yeah

Alright so softshell turtles right. They funky. It’s a lot more obvious that their shells are part of their ribs, as you can actually see the faint outline of their fused vertebrae and ribs on their shells. The reason their shells are so soft is because the edges and much of the lower half of their shell is actually all just cartilage and skin. Their plastron are weird, because the bone plates are largely separate and pointy, held together by harder cartilage the same way human ribs are attached around the sternum.

Donnie was weird to figure out on account of the cartilage lower half of his softshell, but I tried to compromise with his lower back vertebrae being unfused to still allow for the higher mobility required for his waist. Another fun fact about softshell is that they don’t actually have scutes or scales, but because of the look of his plastron and consistency with his brothers in the show, I’m just going to pretend that Draxum mixed in some DNA to let him grow scales for extra protection even if he has less coverage than his brothers. He can “breathe” water by absorbing oxygen through the skin of his throat, not actually by inhaling it. While most turtles can do this to a point, soft shells can stay quite active while doing so.

Personally I like to think of Donnie’s softshell as both a weakness and a strength depending on the situation! While more vulnerable, his skin can heal faster than scutes, and if he sustains blunt damage to his shell he can more easily disperse the force of it because of the give to his cartilage, rather than have the force crack his shell and cause a much more traumatic injury. Kind of like how seatbelts have some give to them to ease into a stop instead of giving someone whiplash.

You might have seen the cover art I sketched for @plothooksinc's fic Infinite Ricochet a couple days ago. I wanted to clean it up a bit, so here's a more refined version 😄

There was actually one more draft I did between the first and this final one, in which I tried a tighter composition and pushed the perspective more. It lost some of the eerie atmosphere though, so I wasn't as happy with it. You can check it out under read more, if you're curious!

Bit of notes for this small update!

I like to imagine that Poptart often hides his own feelings since Sprouts mood would depend on his own. If he can hide whatever he is actually feeling and pretend to be happy, he believes Sprout in turn would be happy as well. I hope to bring this idea up more in the future...

And, I wont draw it, but do imagine lots of training for these two off-screen! (off... comic? off-comic.) I have been meaning to do something showing Sprout training him and showing him some one armed fighting styles, but I dont really know how to turn it into a proper update so 🤔

With that being said though, it is important to note, that Poptart can summon his sword from thin air at will :) this will be important later....
