kim dokja and his shaggy hair he doesnt want to bother spending money to cut it. kim dokja and his egg-on-rice dinner fives days in a row because he doesnt know any other recipes. kim dokja and his cheap ikea* bookshelf that only have his uni textbooks in them and nothing else. kim dokja and the christmas ornament he stole from the store one day just because the anime figurine guy looked like yjh even though he doesnt have anywhere to put it.

-Do you ever wonder if you could save him, Joonghyuk-ssi?
-I was... unconcious.
-Fair.

The talking people are now visible, it's Yoo Sangah and Yoo Joonghyuk.
Yoo Sangah's face us cut off, her eyes consistently hidden, and while she is smiling, it's unclear if the smile reaches her eyes. Behind her Yoo Joonghyuk looks tense.
Yoo Sangah: I just... wish i was stronger.
Yoo Sangah, now getting closer to the mirror: But it seems that stregth... comes with a price.
Mirror's surface is distorted, as if something is trying to crawl out of it.

Yoo Sangah: Turns out i was delusional.

Yoo Sangah is now slowly absorbed by the mirror, half of her body hidden in the black surface. Around her there are many ripples and hands emerging, moving towards her. All of them have same scars. Yoo Sangah looks tired, devastated even.
Yoo Sangah: He paid the price and became...
A shot of hands. Yoo Sangah's hands accepting a clean blade on the left, and Kim Dokja's giving a bloodied one on the right.
Yoo Sangah: ...a constellation. Should i... be scared of him now?

Yoo Joonghyuk is cradling Yoo Sangah's hand gently, comforting her. She is still half way in the mirror.
Yoo Sangah: But i still miss him.
From above there's a huge figure descending, with only white eyes and white coat visible, it's black hand howering behind Yoo Sangah's head, it's black star - behind Yoo Joonghyuk's head. It's Demon King of Salvation.

His hand cradles Yoo Sangah's head gently, carefully, and Yoo Sangah is touching it in the same manner, looking up at the constellation out of frame lovingly.
Yoo Sangah: I miss the humanity he lost. I miss the inhumanity he found.

Yoo Joonghyuk's face is cut off by the border, his expression unclear: But what if he is no longer himself.
A hand cradling Yoo Sangah's head is missing, yet she is still holding the same pose, her hair folding in the air supported by the missing hand. She looks unsettling, smiling with wide open eyes, quiet.

She then turns away, nuzzling into the invisible hand, tears in her eyes, her gentle fingers tracing invisible ones.
Yoo Sangah: I suppose it would mean "Love whatever is left".

Yoo Joonghyuk is left in front of the mirror. There're ripples on its surface along with Yoo Sangah's words.
"He deserves".
Yoo Joonghyuk's head hangs low.
"At least".
Yoo Joonghyuk steps into the mirror, following Yoo Sangah's steps.
"This much".
No one is left in front of the mirror.

A digital comics for Omniscient reader's viewpoint.
"One day, a timer started running".
A system window showing a timer of the first scenario is floating above two figures.Those two figures are fighting - a bigger, older girl is tugging the smaller girls hair, trying to grab her neck. The smaller girl is Yoo Mia, she is clawing at the older girl's hands, struggling.

"I saw something like this..."
A shot of small child kneeling in front of a body, a pair of scissors stuck in girl's throat. A "mission success" window obscures the body's face. Mia looks down at her small yet already bloody hands.

"In one of your... video games?"
Mia remembers her brother's back - the recent past is in front of his pc, the present - in the dark coat under dark sky.

"Why am i the one playing it?"
Someone in front of their door, knocking, shouting. Mia's face is hid in a shadow, only one her eye visible. She is hugging herself with bloody hands, more a frightened animal than a child.

"You always played through harder parts for me".
A collection of frames, timer in each depicting the same moment.
One frame is Mia with bloody scissors in her hands, ready to strike the stranger's hands reaching towards her.
One frame is Yoo Joonghyuk looking in, the door of their flat hanging open, as if someone broken in by force. His face completely hidden behind the timer.
One frame is Mia's body on the floor in a pool of lood, door open.
One frame is a close up of Mia's eyes, full of tears, seemingly waiting and waiting.
The page is framed with Mia's wide open scred eye and bloody fingers at the upper corner and Yoo Joonghyuk's fingers wiping blood away at the lower part of the page.

"Why were you late?"
An almost empty page. The upper left corner is an opened door, Yoo Joonghyuk's leg and hand are visible - he is behind the door, slumped motionlessly in the corridor. In the lower right corner is Mia's body, strangled, with a timer that ran out, and someone's footsteps near her head.

"Are you... also killed?"
A frame of Mia hiding in a closet with a terrified face, curling into herself, framed by her small hand with bloody scissors at the top and an adult's hand with a knife at the bottom.

"Or are you... doing the killing?"
A shot of Yoo Joonghyuk on some rubble from the back, looking into the distance. A body of one of the zombies is barely visible at his feet.

A textless page. Left side is broken into several frames, all depicting the same moment in different rounds. One is empty, the other is Yoo Joonghyuk's dejected looking torso, cut off by the frame's borders, another is the same adult with a knife, ready to open the doors of the closet, the last one is Yoo Joonghyuk on his knees. The right side is one tall frame of insides of the closet. Mia in hugging her knees, hiding in the darkness.

A close up on Mia with her back to the slightly opening closet doors. Her face is terrified, the sounds from the flat impossible to decipher. An even closer shot of her eye, tears welling up.

The doors are opened, the figure holding them is big and imposing, looking down on Mia. Their features are hidden in the shadow yet the light falling on them gets warmer.

The face is still hidden under the shadow, but one eye is visible. It's Yoo Joonghyuk, and he looks sad, dejected. Mia is looking up at him, her face is now visible, tear-streaked and blank.
-...Mia. We need to go.

The lightest page, it's Mia falling into her brother's hands, hugging him and crying, looking like a normal kid now, not a cornered animal. Yoo Joonghyuk is holding her with one hand, trying to fix her hair with another, his face full of worry and guilt. The light falling on them is almost fully peach warm, still tinted at the bottom with greyish teal.

A shot of Kim Dokja from the back. He is standing on a path made out of screens-tiles, each depicting a scene. Closest to him are a scene of his companions calling out to him and a scene of unconcious Yoo Joonghyuk sleeping somewhere. Further aways, disappearing in the dark, are two female silhouettes, possibly Lee Sookyung and Han Sooyoung back on Earth.

"Worse than a proper one"

"Accustomed to seeing"
A reflection of younger Kim Dokja in an old pc screen. He looks down, just as sad and disheartened as his older self. There are pages visible on the screen.

"But not participating"
A shot from inside the train carrier. Hands claw at the closed doors, leaving bloody traces on the glass. It's Kim Dokja's crumbling hands. Behind the glass there is a night sky.

"Maybe that is why"
Kim Dokja is sitting on a train seat with his legs, looking to the right. He is wearing his stark wjite coat, and looks empty. He is surrounded by an empty void, all alone in the space he is in.

"Their expressions are hard to pin down"
A mirror image of the previous one, but this Kim Dokja is looking at his companions, who surround him. They all sit on grass, with a darkening sky above them. Still, all the faces of Kim Dokja's companions are hidden as if drawn over with a pen.

"If i never experience that strong of a feeling"
Kim Dokja at the end of the 1863 arc, from the back, hunched down with his black wings framing his back. His horns are crumbling, and so does the black star of a constellation above his head.

"How can i put it on a page?"
A mirror image of Kim Dokja from the first page - but now it's Han Sooyoung looking down on Kim Dokja with her face hidden under a heavy shadow, her expression impossible to pin down. She is wearing a bright white coat.

"A story written by someone that inadequate"
A page almost fully black. In the upper left corner, there is barely visible figure of young Han Sooyoung in front of a computer screen, typing. On her chair there's barely visible hand of the Dokkaebi king. Only whatever is bathed in the light of the screen is visible.

"Surely it's not a read you would approve of"
A similarly almost completely black page. In contrats with the text, a happy Kim Dokja, visible in the light of his phone, sits in a hospital bed. An IV drip is visible next to him, with the bags going from seemingly normal one to Story fluid the higher they sit.
Full text says:
"I suppose, in a sense... I'm also a writer, worse than a proper one, with my hands accustomed to turning pages, not filling them. My heart, as well, accustomed to seeing, but not participating. [The story 'King of a Kingless World' has started the story.]

[The story 'Person who Opposes the Miracle' has started the story.]

[The story 'Demon King of Salvation' has started the story.]

[Giant Story 'Demon Realm's Spring' has started the story.]

All the stories I accumulated answered for me. There was also a story I saw for the first time.

[The story 'Life and Death Companions' has started the story.]

All the stories flowed towards the proper ending.

so i don't know if I've posted about this before, but considering that the basis of power in the star stream is the kind of stories you have, and that the stories you have lock you into a continual repeat of those stories, it is intensely important to gather stories that have the right sort of themes and utility for what you're trying to do. you don't want your achilles heel to be something you don't know how to manage, and you want your strengths to be something you can easily command.

kim dokja, trying to overturn the star stream, is gathering stories with a theme of deconstruction and rebellion. intensely, intensely useful for overturning the order of the world, but more critically, also useful for ensuring the stories themselves won't rule him to quite the extent other constellation's stories do. when a theme of a story is deconstruction, you can tear it down and remake it as many times as you need to in order to achieve your goals.

(this does get out of hand a bit later with the torch that swallowed the myth. we'll discuss it when it comes lmao)

equally important that his founding stories also have themes of saving the downtrodden and working together with them. he wants to see this world overturned, but more importantly, he wants his companions to make it to the end. these are all building themes that will ensure he tells the exact kind of story he wants to tell!

anyway, have you made a fic rec post? I would love to see some well characterised orv fics but I don't know how to find them and you are the only person who knows hsy personally through prophetic visions :DD

i have not made a general orv one! im honoured you trust my taste enough to ask though honestly i'm not the biggest kim dokja angst fiend so im unsure if you'll get what youre looking for. still i'll give it a shot

i am the dreadful need (and the devotee) - i have recommended this before and i'm doing so again. a vaguely orpheus and eurydice inspired story focused on the inevitability of looking back. it's technically yoohankim but mainly a sort of yoo joonghyuk character study that i highly enjoyed

The Act of Creation - a post-epilogue tranfem yoo joonghyuk fic that is a fandom classic (to me at least) by my dear mutual! a very sweet fic and a good extrapolation of many of the trans themes/moments in yoo joonghyuk's story

The cough that won't go away - an adorable hanahaki au ( i shant spoil who between) set about 10 years post epilogue. made me laugh a lot and captures a lot of the warmth in the relationships in kimcom

the false last act - top 10 fics that make me wanna puke and throw up and die and kill myself and die again. slash pos. really good epilogue fic!!!

The Scars of Dreaming - a fic centred on conversations between oldest dream and kim dokja carried out over a period of time as they both try to adjust post-epilogue.

and you will find your way in any given storm - thee na bori/lee jihye fic as far as im concerned.

what the living do - another good epilogue fic. epilogue fics tend to be a favourite of mine im realising.....what can i say im fascinated by that time in their lives and i think this fic portrays it well

Moments that the Words Don't Reach - another epilogue fic this time focused on han sooyoung taking care of yoo mia after yoo joonghyuk leaves for space. when i say this devastated me beyond belief i am not joking. i will be thinking about the scene on the subway forever and ever

a couple general author recs are:

stuffandsundry has a lot of good fics but i especially recommend this selencroft fic, this 0th turn fic, and this 999th lee jihye fic! theyre all short oneshots that capture moments of relationships in orv that make my heart hurt

namci is another i recommend, they have a lot of good oneshots that i think i've recommended before. alternatively making me cackle and nod thoughtfully at character analysis. i would especially suggest this yoohankim university au

sonasona is an orv veteran and has a delightful array of works to show for it. what remains is a particular favourite as i adore cigarettes and the metaphorical implications thereof

i'm sure there are others im forgetting right now but these are more or less the best from my bookmarks so..hope you enjoy :)

thinking again about kim dokja's face censor and how its such a good mechanic. foreshadows the most ancient dream reveal. shows how his desperate wish to be a normal child effects him still to this day. functions as an extension of his reader-self-insert status. and most excellently shows exactly how much his disassociation and distancing from everyone and everything in his life affects him, to the point where his loved ones can't even recognize his face. that when they think of him it is with his back turned and expression obscured because they never knew anything else. no one can recall his features, be reminded of them when they look at his mother or see his familiar facial expressions in his kids. he's perpetually a blank slate, someone neither we nor his loved ones can see anything distinctive in because thats the point of his character and i so deeply adore it. someone needs to get sing shong out of the kitchen because they cannot keep cooking like this

i think more modern aus should commit to trying to translate yoohankims batshit neuroses about each other to a non-apocalyptic scenario. i love an au where kim dokja was yoo joonghyuk's first watcher when he started streaming with han sooyoung as his mod and han sooyoung makes yoo joonghyuk stream every night to make sure kim dokja keeps watching and doesnt kill himself and theyre both doing it for him but of course they both get in simultaneous dramatic car accidents that gives them both amnesia so they forget kim dokja was their first watcher. but he stays a fan for 13 years (and gets into internet beef with han sooyoung in the meantime) and then they all meet dramatically. so kim dokja manipulates the shit out of yoo joonghyuk to make his twitch channel blow up even more 'for his own good' while also engaging in psychosexual mind games with han sooyoung until he fakes his own death and runs away with his biological daughter (via bihyung obvs) and han sooyoung and yoo joonghyuk (who have forgotten each other too but realise their shared backstory over the course of the journey) have to hunt him down and confess their love. and its a coffee shop au btw

here’s the thing it’s like an integral part of orv, in my opinion, is that to some degree it will be hostile to the reader. every reader. people who come for the number go up power leveling will be put through s&s’ philosophical agenda/literary conspiracy board, people who come for the overarching themes and narratives have to sit through fucking capture the flag arc and other such agonies. do not tell me of a fan of orv who enjoyed every development every aspect every word I will not believe you.
