jack keeps moving. he moves and moves and moves until Davey stops him like a brick wall. one night, davey hugs him just right and jack dissolves. all of a sudden, davey feels tears soaking through his shirt, and feels jack sob. he hugs jack tighter . everything rushes back to jack. the warmth of his little bedroom, his dad's cooking. he never knew his mom, but his dad was better than jack thinks a mom could have ever been.

all of a sudden, jack realises that his father is gone. forever. he died almost 9 years ago.

and fuck, jack never stopped moving for long enough to realise.

consider clean freak jack who just never had the opportunity to be clean, being homeless & a newsie ... when he moves in with Davey, Davey sees a massive shift in his behaviour and how he looks. all of a sudden, he's always devoid of dirt and his hair is always fluffy and clean. his clothes are immaculate, and davey, now seeing jack how he looks normally, is SO smitten. all of a sudden, jack has freckles???? he blushes super easily,??? there's just so many small details that davey never saw when jack was grimy ...

had a rough time with the harmonies in this one and also the first couple times we ran the scene before it i completely forgot my lines after the kiss because i was nervous LMAO so during the show i was always wicked nervous that was gonna happen again.

okay so im a dancer first. usually jack doesn’t dance much but i did! and then i ran around the entire auditorium because snyder was chasing me. i was so tired and out of breath and also just nervous for santa fe.

and here it is! my favorite song that i was in. the energy in this song is so incredibly high and i just always felt that the ensemble was having just as much fun as i was.

“Look.” Jack murmurs quietly, pointing at the lights above them. “Big Dipper.”

“No, it isn’t.” Davey says immediately, because he’s a proud know-it-all and must prove it at all times. “It’s just the only constellation you know. You can point to any square-ish set of stars and say it’s the Big Dipper and no one would know the difference.”

Jack scoffs indignantly and jabs him with his fork, sticky with marshmallow fluff.

“You find it, then!”

Davey grabs Jack’s hand and points it to the left.

“There.”

“Really?”

“No.”

and also consider jack biting davey because he has no other way to externalise affection .....

jack curled up in his bed in college, cramps kicking his ass into next week ... davey comes home, and immediately puts his hand on jacks crampy bit and jack literally fixes up immediately .. davey has massive warm hands btw :)

ok so you know how sometimes if someone's in a really stressful situation their period just doesn't come ... consider ftm jack who gets his first period at 16-17 because his whole life has been soooo stressful ... finally in a brief period of calmness (maybe it's just after the strike or something???) he get his period and has NO IDEA what to do ... like he's never been in this situation, the only woman he talks to is Katherine .... he's properly stuck ... like he doesn't leave his bed ... and when he actually cannot take it anymore (cramps kicking his ass and he's well and truly bled thru his pants) he decides to suck it up ... who does he go to??? SPOT MOTHERFUCKING CONLON ... he could go to Kath but he knows she would judge ... and even tho jack and spot don't talk too much jack knows she won't judge and her and the rest of the brooklyn newsies can prob give him supplies AND tips ... win win ... anyway spot had no idea jack was even trans and gave him multiple tips on like everything (including binding in a way that isn't harmful) anyway spot conlon is a hardcore girls girl and jack has no idea what a woman is

ME WITH JAVEY

Jack looks at him for a moment, blinking slowly as the gears click in his drunken brain, as he takes in the tight line of Davey's mouth, the knot in his jaw, the clench of his fists. His smile quivers, crumples like wet paper, and his whole body tears itself around a sharp, pained sob.

“Jack?!” Davey blinks, suddenly off-kilter, like he’d been punched in the stomach.. “What’s wrong, what happened-?”

“I got nothin’, Dave,” Jack laughs wetly, his mouth squared in a poor impersonation of a smile, all stretched and wrong. A crayon drawing, a caricature. How long has he been posing? “Got nothin’ at all. Ain’t that funny? All these folks got me, and I got nothin’.”

“Jack-“

“I could be anyone’s.” Jack hiccups. “Anyone at all, y’know? S’long’s they were nice enough. An’ I give all these little bits o’ me every day, and no one-“ He shudders, quivers out a laugh like it’s funny, like this is all some cosmic joke. “No one wants ‘em. No one wants me, Davey…”

“Hey!” Davey lurches forward, his body not knowing anything other than help Jack, hold Jack. He grabs him by the shoulders, supports Jack’s limp body with his own, like a shield, like armour. “That’s not true, you understand? We want you. We want you right where you are.”

Jack shakes his head, curling forward until his brow meets Davey’s collarbone, a feeble prayer. He quakes against him, hiccupping broken laughs, dampening Davey’s shirt with tears.

“No one’s mine…” He whimpers, like he didn’t even hear a word Davey’d said, like they weren’t real at all. “I’m everyone’s, all the time, and no one’s mine.”

confident davey is my favorite trope and i think we need more of it. hear me out.

jack, being known as the confident and charismatic leader of the manhattan newsies, always shamelessly flirting with anyone he can, never afraid to push the Delancy brothers (and others’) buttons, he’s jack kelly for christ’s sake. and then davey shows up, and everyone thinks he’s this uptight, quiet smart kid who has no business being on the streets selling papers, but he’s the first person who is able to get Jack Kelly to shut up and listen. so now the newsies are aware there’s something special about this kid, and they start to notice even more when jack loses his ability to think or function or act like his usual charming self the moment davey walks into the room.

idk maybe i’m a sucker for the old “nobody makes me lose my composure except this one person” trope. but like!! davey who shamelessly compliments jack in front of others!! davey who isn’t afraid to kiss him on the cheek at family dinner!! davey who has total control over jack’s charisma and he knows it!!

Javey go stargazing on top of a building, the feelings are big and raw and decidedly there. Davey compares jack to the stars and jack doesn't know how to respond. Jacks emotions are so big he doesn't know how to express it with words, so he expresses it with touches. Lying down shoulder to shoulder with Davey, sitting them both up just so he can gently trace his knuckles over the perfect curves and corners of davey's face. The reflection of the galaxy in his eyes, the breeze tossing pollen and dust over his features.

Jack doesn't know how to deflect, as he does with so many things, the way Davey's eyes fill with absolute love when he looks at jack. He's never seen this much love come out of one person, directed at him. The city can't see them up on top of this building, the newsies aren't here to laugh and jeer and make fun of jack when he fits himself into Davey's shadow sometimes.

And he might only get this chance once.

He kisses Davey like it's the last time he'll ever see him, like when the sun begins to rise, Davey will dissolve into the morning air.

Davey kisses back, smiling like he's meeting an old friend.

On that night they feel complete. So fully, truly complete.
