WARNINGS ; blood, injury, mentions of death, being tied up, mentions of animal cruelty (?) .

“Where did Riki run off to?”

Salacia opened her eyes, stretching her half human, half fish body out. As she did so, she turned to her side, nearly blinded by the bright sun shining directly on her. She expected to see her brother next to her, either asleep or chatting with his friends. However, all she saw was an empty rock, without the presence of her brother. She didn’t see the inhabitant roaming around, nor did she have any recollection of him waking her up with the desire to explore the vast sea. He knew to never venture too far without alerting her. She always told him to bring a friend along as well if he wanted to go somewhere.

She sat up, thinking for a minute that in the haze of just waking up that her memory was lagging, and he did tell her. She was planning to go find him or his friends, but she saw all six of his friends swimming to her which stopped her train of thought. Before she could, the oldest spoke to her. “Morning, Cia. Is Riki here?” It was usually Riki going to them, asking to hang out, so her mind quickly developed the fact that Riki was missing. She didn’t panic yet, it was a regular thing that Riki, being a teen, purposely snuck off sometimes or simply got distracted and went too far.

She sighed, stretching once again to awaken herself to begin her search. “No, I’ll find him..” She murmured. She felt an unusual pang of worry in her heart, thinking of where he could be.

She closed her eyes, focusing on the vibrations in the water to track him down. She scanned the ocean, sensing a few schools of fish, and a boat using a net to catch fish. She brushed it off, there hadn’t been any sailors fishing for a few days already. They could have it this time, a rule given by her father that she reluctantly abided to. She hated seeing all the poor fish stolen from the sea for humans to eat.

After a minute of searching and anticipating stares from the six in front of her, her expression twisted. She couldn’t feel him in the water, at all. Her attention went back to the clump of fish being lifted in the net. She focused on it, digging deep inside the clump of fish. Her blood visibly went cold. She could feel a larger body inside that net, definitely a mermaid, and hopefully not Riki.

No matter who it was, a mermaid being seen by humans would be the doom of the Pearl Sea. Once one human got their hands on a mermaid, they’ll map it and everyone else will start catching the surviving creatures. These captured mermaids, will either be killed and eaten, or locked up as an aquarium attraction. Possibly, their scales would be used as decoration, like how they used shark teeth. She always saw surfers with their shark tooth necklaces, calling themselves, ‘lovers of the sea’, despite wearing one of the most hateful things towards the sea a human could wear. Any time a mermaid was spotted on the sea, there would never be a peaceful encounter. Even pirates, the most hated of all the humans, wouldn’t spare them. They would be shot down cruelly as if they were sea monsters. Sometimes they wouldn’t even try to recover the body, just letting it sink for the rest of the poor fish to see.

Riki’s friends saw the concern creeping into her face, but they couldn’t even inquire before she rushed away. She swam quickly up to the distant net, her eyes locked on the boat. None of them tried to stop her, as it wasn’t their place to. As the protector of the Pearl Sea, it was her duty to dash to any danger and get rid of it.

She made it up to the bottom of the net shortly, ripping it apart with her claws and freeing the fish. Her mind was yelling at her, telling her one thing— Riki was on that boat and she needed to save him. After ensuring they were making their escape, she began climbing up the net, her tail dissipating and shifting into scaly legs. She climbed the net like a ladder, taking a small leap out of the water for a head start. Seconds later, her foot became tangled, she could barely struggle before being roughly lifted out of the water and thrown onto the hard wooden deck of the ship. She let out a small yelp, her eyes closed in pain and nausea. The rope started dragging her, but she untangled her foot before she could get too far.

At the sound of a confused voice, she opened her eyes, immediately becoming alert. She wasn’t as dizzy as she was before. “Where did our fi- Woah!” She jumped up quietly, crouching and peering from the corner of a wall.

She saw Riki, laid on his side and tangled in the ropes. A man, the one talking, was standing over him, his back turned towards her. Riki’s whole body was restrained. His arms were together and he couldn’t move his neck unless he wanted to be strangled by the strand around his neck. He looked around for an escape, making eye contact with her. The man started to alert his crew members, but was interrupted. Riki flailed, landing a slap on the man’s face with his tail.

The man grimaced, letting out an angry yelp before jogging into one of the other rooms in the ship.

With the short amount of freedom she had, she stumbled her way over to Riki with her weak legs. She felt a shock up her body every time the soles of her foot touched the wooden deck.

She worked in a hassle, trying to get the ropes off of Riki before he could come back. She had to manually do it, as she would hurt him using her claws. She had small experience with ropes and tangled animals, constantly being called to help with circular plastic or plastic bags. However, this time she was scared for both of their lives, her hands shaking tremendously. It wasn’t as easy as it usually was. Riki couldn’t even try to help her in such a predicament.

At the sound of multiple rushed footsteps, she tried working faster, to no avail. She heard another shocked gasp from the one who was smacked. “Woah! Another one! And she has legs with scales!”

She paused, turning at the sound of the footsteps coming a bit too close. She was met nearly face to face with the same man, his eyes darting around her face, studying her. Behind him stood two other men. She froze up, gaining a realization that these were pirates, not sailors. They all had messy appearances, and different clothing attire instead of uniform. This one had neck-length, messy hair. His white and black hair had slight waves. It was in a half up-half down style, some of it sticking out as bangs in the front. He had a sharp jawline, along with a beautifully sculpted nose. He had deep, blank eyes which sparkled more the longer he looked at her.

His lips were parted in astonishment as he stared at her. His hand slowly raised, cupping her cheek. His thumb pressed on her lips, invading in an attempt to see her teeth. She bit down on his finger before she could even realize it, causing him to cuss and pull away. She felt a new substance on her lip, her tongue darting out to collect it and bringing a metal taste into her mouth. Riki chuckled, seeing the surprised and pained expression on his face as the other two investigated his injury, mumbled worries leaving their mouths.

One of the men turned to the two with a savage, fiery look in his eyes. He crossed his hands behind his broad, muscular back, his once empty hands returning with two long swords, with a red glowing eye shaped similar to his in the hilts of them. She instantly saw his intentions, snarling at him in hopes of intimidating him. She protectively moved in front of Riki, who could only helplessly lift his head. The man looked tough, so of course he wasn’t scared at all.

He didn’t waste any time leaping towards them, leaving scratches on the two. He slashed her shoulder before turning his sword and leaving a deep gash on Riki’s tail. He only went for his tail, as he would’ve unintentionally freed him if he cut elsewhere. She could barely react, he was too fast and had her clutching her bleeding shoulder in the blink of an eye.

The man was about to give the two the fish dinner treatment, before someone else in the crew intervened. She heard his voice, but paid him no attention, too invested in the conditions of Riki and herself. Her brother was groaning, his mind clearly fogged up and in another painful place which worried her. She had heard too much about a mermaid poison which could only be retrieved from the deadliest sirens out there. She felt dizzy herself, the two mermaids panting in an effort to not pass out.

“San, wait. What’s this?” The new man inquired, the one named ‘San’ backing away from them. He knew that he wasn’t supposed to hurt or destroy any invaders on the ship unless they were actively attacking.

San started to answer, but the one who she bit responded excitedly. “Mermaids! I got bit!” He held his finger out, a slow stream of blood running down it. He was like a child, so happy with his new discovery that even being attacked was fascinating to him. He wasn’t upset about the bite either way, he wanted it had it coming after sticking his hands in her mouth like that.

“Wooyoung, go get Captain and Yeosang.” The man gave an order, receiving a ‘Yes sir!’ in return. He jogged away happily, but he made sure to go quickly.

The man pushed past San, crouching down in front of them, though he was sure to keep his distance. He could see that they were hurt, and that San most likely used it. She had her guard up, cautiously staring at the three who still remained. San glared at her, a threatening, ‘Try something and I’ll kill you.’ look in his eyes. From the new one, a surprisingly sympathetic and curious look. The tall one who she didn’t realize was pointing his gun at her earlier, stared at her with an unreadable expression.

“Are you okay?” The newer man spoke up quietly, full of worry as he leaned forward in the slightest. She didn’t respond, a scowl on her face. The two were breathing heavily, her focus was now on defending so she hadn’t even realized Riki passed out. “You’re safe now.” He said softly, although he couldn’t promise that. Their safety depended on both their doctor and captain, and just the luck of natural selection. If the captain approved of letting them live, it would then be up to Yeosang. It now depended on if he could obtain the antidote and whether it would work or not. No matter what, Yeosang never gave up on a patient unless he was certain there was nothing he could do.

She didn’t trust his words at all, her eyes darting around to look for an escape. She saw nothing, especially with Riki so restrained. Even so, she wouldn’t leave him here. She would carry him on her back if she had to, or drag him by the ropes. She could never abandon him, even if it meant risking her life. She would never leave behind anyone who she loved ever again. He always came first, even if he was born to be her divine guardian. She felt as if he had more potential as the sea’s guardian, not her.

TAGS ; hongjoong is a squirrel, angst - comfort, mentions of losing home, hurricane/storm, might be a bit messy at the beginning but it comes together trustt

Kenya was fresh in her new home, just an hour away from her parents when a hurricane decided to emerge and begin its path towards her city. She didn’t have a single speck of salvageable food in her house. It had barely been a full week since she moved in, she was still unpacking and the job she applied for hadn’t responded yet. The neighbors were friendly and loved her, so she had some small snacks and a cake from the little welcome party they held. She lived off of that during the small unpacking break she gave herself. For meals, she had been getting takeout for the past few days. To make matters worse, the television hadn’t arrived yet, so she never got the three day notice. If it weren’t for one of her neighbors alerting her, she would’ve been outside just as it passed by. If this hurricane was as bad as the last, she was doomed because of how underprepared she was. She would either lose her home, becoming broke and lonely or go back to where she was born. There was no way she would be going back to the controlling home she just escaped from.

Hongjoong had known the hurricane was on its way a few days before the rest of the humans did, even from his spot in the tree in front of Kenya’s new home. The problem, was that he had nowhere to go. He didn’t want to be dragged far, far away by the wind again, but he wasn’t about to try and get into a shelter far, far away from the tree. Not when he was so close to finding his parents. He usually stayed with the nice, old couple who resided in the house in front of his tree. However, the day that young adults, who he could guess were relatives, started coming over to clear out the home, he knew what would happen. They got inside a car and never returned, but not before bidding him adieu with rubs and snacks. Those were the only nice humans he met. The rest of them either stared at him unsettlingly, called him ‘sandy cheeks’, tried to catch him, or tried to chase him away. So, he didn’t like to approach humans that much.

He was going to keep his peace and avoid her as well, until one particular day. She had received a crate of strawberries from a neighbor who ‘didn’t have enough space in her fridge’, and she took them inside. That neighbor was the one who notified her about the incoming danger. The lady had offered her a safer place to stay, but the girl refused. He thought that it would be his last time seeing her from so close for the day, but she came back out with one in her hand. She had noticed the red squirrel looking from the top of the tree and wanted to try and feed him. If it was possible, maybe even bring him into her house. She didn’t want him to be swept away by the ferocious winds or struck by the flashing lightning. Even though as a child she was scolded for being friendly with animals, she wanted to at least try. She was told that sometimes, the animals could be hybrids and that those things are creeps. She didn’t believe any of their words, it only spurred her on to try and find one rather than adopting. Now, with those words, she wanted to allow him in even more in the case that he was human.

That day, she walked outside with a strawberry in her hand. She saw the squirrel about to climb up the tree, staring at her cautiously as she approached. To get it to put its guard down, she crouched down to give herself a smaller stature. She took baby steps, slow and tiny until his tail was twitching and she crouched right in front of him. Holding out the strawberry to him, murmuring, “Here,” she watched as the critter hastily took the strawberry and scurried back to the tree. That was Hongjoong’s first time having something sweet in a while. He watched as she smiled softly, ensuring that the cute squirrel ate the strawberry before heading back inside. She would use that as her tactic. She was always warned to never feed animals, or else they’ll be attached to her. However, now she wanted that outcome.

The interaction both worked in her favor, and it made him feel more comfortable with the plan he was about to attempt.

An hour after he watched her leave the house, the girl returned with her car door open, bringing in bags of groceries. He knew that she was preparing for the hurricane that would occur iim nearly six hours. She had a few cases of bottled waters left in her car, which she was struggling to carry and bring inside. Her body was already sore from all the unpacking and traveling back and forth, which made it no easier. As he saw her heaving, trudging back out to grab the second case, he emerged from behind the tree trunk and stood in front of her. She paused seeing the squirrel staring up at her, tail twitching.

After she blinked, a young man with dull, red hair and wide eyes was peering at her. He was about an inch taller than her, and she couldn’t miss the tiny ears on his head or the huge, puffy tail behind him. He opened his mouth, closed it again in hesitation, opened it again and spoke. “D-Do you n-need help?”

Seeing the way she stared at him, mumbling, “Uh..”, he was about to retrace his tracks and die of embarrassment, but she finally responded. Shaking off the shock she felt, she gave a nod and a hum. Some people owned hybrids, but she had never talked to one personally. She hadn’t really seen one, other than the police dogs that visited her school years ago. The squirrel-man instantly went to work, grabbing the case of waters and heading inside to find where she placed the other. He was internally scolding himself for doing it so awkwardly.

Once her car was empty, before he could execute his plan she did it for him. “Do you have a home? Do you need to stay with me during the hurricane..?” She decided to take the chance and ask while she could.

“Yes..” He mumbled, happy she offered first so he wouldn’t have to ask. He knew that squirrel hybrids were uncommon, so he didn’t want to seem weird. As she led him into her house, he spoke timidly. “T-Thank you for the strawberry earlier…”

She smiled, taking one out the container she was moving out of the fridge. She gave it to him. “You’re welcome. Make sure you wash it off.” He went straight to the sink to run it under the water. After a few brief seconds, he shoved the whole thing in his mouth, leaves and all. She chuckled at the sight. “You can have one any time you want.” He stood there fiddling with his fingers as she filled the fridge and cabinets with necessities. When she stood and began walking, he trailed behind her as well.

She went to the windows to close the shutters, and he spoke as he looked at the tree he spent most of his day burrowed inside of. “Thank you so much for letting me stay.. I’ll sleep out here, and I’ll be good, I swear..” He knew that some, if not, all humans doubted hybrids like him. They only trusted cats and dogs, yet barely even those species.

“Make yourself comfortable... Did I get your name?” She questioned, appreciating how he wasn’t going to try anything. She didn’t think he would be so ill-spirited even after the little snacks she gave him anyways.

“Hongjoong… Yours?” He watched as she went into a nearby bag, fishing out a laptop.

“Kenya. Is there anything you want to do..? Sorry, but I don’t have a TV yet.” She trailed off. She would’ve offered him her laptop to watch something, but she couldn’t trust a stranger with access to such sensitive information. Even if she watched it with him, she had plans on taking a shower so she really had no idea what to offer him during his stay. She was freshly an adult in her own house, so she was new to having guests over.

“Not really, I was planning on napping during the hurricane..” He said, hoping his body would go along with that plan. He could sleep for over half a day if he was tired enough, so he deliberately stayed up during the last few nights. If he went to sleep now and entered that deep sleep, it would be nearly impossible for the thunder to stir him awake. He felt rude for invading her house just to completely ignore her, but she didn’t seem to mind. They were technically neighbors, so he had many chances to speak to her anyways.

“Oh, okay. I had the same idea.” She said, continuing with, “Let me know if you need anything..” She trailed off as her feet took her towards the stairs. She took a quick trip to grab him a cover and pillow, before she notified him of the location of the bathroom and finally got comfortable in her bed. Before she fell asleep, she did hear him getting up and meddling in the kitchen. Her ears told her he was going to get strawberries, possibly to help him fall asleep.

The house finally settled down, the hurricane quietly beginning its course. During the night, she was awakened by the sound and feeling of light shuffling and quiet sniffles and hiccups. Alongside that, the fierce winds, aggressive thunder, and pattering rain of a hurricane. She felt a new body underneath her covers, trembling violently. She took a moment to recover from her sleepy state, the sound of thunder and rain about to lull her back to sleep. It was all comforting to her, but it seemed the opposite for the squirrel behind her. She turned towards him, his head lifting as he muttered small apologies. “I-I’m sorry, I’ll.. I’ll go back.. I-I just..”

She stopped him before he could leave, lightly placing a hand on his shivering shoulder. She didn’t want him to leave just yet. She knew that some people had anxiety with storms like this, and she wasn’t upset with that. He could see the worry etched in her face clearly, yet she could barely see her own hand in the darkness of the room. “Is everything okay?” Her voice came out, gentle and slightly raspy with sleep.

“Y-Yes.. I-I just.. don’t like the storm.. I don’t want to be alone..” He stuttered, his voice high with small sobs in between his words. He mumbled the last words. She cupped his cheek with one hand, wiping his tears softly. With the other, she lightly combed his hair out of his face. She hoped it was comforting him. She wasn’t used to being around hybrids.

“It’s okay.. I won’t leave you alone.. Nothing will happen..” She whispered, cradling his head in her arms. He buried his face in her chest. She had could guess what happened to make him so panicked in a situation like this, due to her observations. She was tempted to ask and confirm, but she kept her mouth shut. He would be the one to decide whether or not to tell her.

He sobbed for a bit longer, before the noises were reduced to sniffles and slow breathing. She had fallen back asleep herself, yet he didn’t even notice because he was content with just her presence. He had been alone for so long, he forgot how it felt to be cared for. The two slept in the bed peacefully until the morning, when the hurricane had passed by their area. It was still raining a bit, but it had moved into the next city.

She woke up before he did, untangling herself from his limbs and going straight to the restroom. He had started clinging to her body as he slept, instead of just a light hug. After she finished her business in the bathroom, she decided it wouldn’t harm to take a quick shower. As she grabbed her clothes, she saw that he didn’t stir after she unintentionally closed the drawers roughly. She didn’t think he would be awake for a while. She never saw him outside his tree at this hour, so she concluded that he slept for long hours of the day.

After cleaning herself, she visited the room again to find him laid on his back, eyes open. He turned when she entered, staring at her for a moment before waving.

“Morning.” She murmured in response. “I’m going to cook breakfast. Is french toast okay?”

“Mhm.” He hummed. A minute and a trip to the bathroom later, the squirrel had joined the girl in the kitchen. He watched as she cooked, flipping the bread on the pan onto the other side.

“Sorry about last night..” He started, feeling the need to apologize. Even though she was completely inviting, allowing him to stay without a problem, he still felt like he was invading her quiet life.

“Don’t worry, it’s fine. I know that animals can hate storms, and just loud noises in general.” She reassured him, placing the bread on a plate. She never had a pet herself, but she recalled friends telling her how terrified their dogs are whenever it’s a holiday that involves fireworks. She placed another slice of bread on the pan, letting it cook as she talked to him.

“Thank you.. It’s just.. I lost my family during the last hurricane a few months ago… ” He started, staring blankly at the french toast as she decorated it with whipped cream and strawberries. He was used to explaining this to other animals, hoping they’d seen them somewhere. “Our tree fell down, and the winds and flood took me..” He took a breath, “I haven’t seen them since.”

“Do you want me to help you find them..?” She asked hesitantly. She didn’t know if he would take that in the wrong way, she hoped not.

He watched as she flipped the bread around, “Would you really?” He didn’t think that a human would really have the time or patience to be searching for three little squirrels.

“Yes. I need the company, anyway. Also, you seem to know the area better so a tour guide wouldn’t be too bad.” She joked, winking as she handed him the french toast.

“Thank you, I really appreciate it. And for the food too, thank you.” He stuttered, taking the food happily. He was so excited to indulge in this plate. He never tasted whipped cream before. He could only stare at the desserts through the windows of the cafes he passed by. “I think.. I’ll go back to the tree when I finish.. Just let me know when you have time to go.”

“I will, and don’t worry. You’re free to come over anytime if you need anything.” She said while adding her own toppings onto her french toast. She smiled at first out of politeness, but it became genuine when she realized how easily she made a new friend, especially for a hybrid. It told her that she would be fine in this new neighborhood.

While eating, she learned that Hongjoong had been living, searching, and exploring in the area for about a year, so he knew the place pretty well. That meant that while searching for his family, he could also be giving her a tour of the city. With this knowledge, the two made the decision to start off sooner, the next day.

Ari’s masterlist

Pain pulsed behind her eyes, fish flopping all around her, the heaviness of a giant net pulling at her legs? as she tried to move, the shouting voices around her ringing through her head like spiked nails.

What happened…where am I?

Her vision cleared slightly as her method of capture was ripped away, the weight of the net disappearing allowing Y/n to gasp a strained breath. The sun blinded her again though as she was tossed onto her back, pain shooting through her as she hit the wood deck with a thud.

“…in the net?…middle of no where…who is she?”

Fragments of words made their way through the sharp feeling splitting her skull, nothing concrete enough to help her understand. She flinched at the harsh shout of their captain, a shadow crouching to block the sun as one of the fishermen pulled her eye open, the beam of light like an arrow through her head. Gasping out, she shut her eyes tightly, trying to weakly swat the man away from her. The strength in her arms was concerning, the grip of the fisherman easily stopping her movements.

“…her head…see?…blood there from the net…no, looks like hers.”

Blood? I’m bleeding?

Y/n tried to pull her hands from the fisherman again, her efforts futile as they started to drag her below the deck, panic filling her alongside the pain as she could only see as the sun disappeared. Her legs felt foreign to her, their weakness being her literal downfall as she tumbled off the last few stairs and landed heavily at her captor’s feet.

A quiet groan left her as the man crouched above her, pulling her head to face him and shaking her slightly until she attempted to look at him through bleary eyes.

“Who are you, huh? Where did you come from, all the way out here?”

I wish I knew…Rolling her eyes closed again, she lolled her head to the side in pain, trying to push him away.

“Tsk…should’ve just thrown you back in the ocean.”

The fisherman stood then, pulling open a grated door and picking her up far enough to throw her into the makeshift cell. Y/n crumpled to the floor, the pain too much as she closed her eyes and pressed her cheek against the cool wood beneath her. Finally she was able to lift her hand to her head, even through her blurry vision she could see the red that tinted her fingers when she pulled them away. Letting the darkness close in on her consciousness, the sudden and violent lurching of the ship didn’t concern her as she slipped into her dreams.

Tranquil, crystal clear, light-streaked blue waters surround her as far as her eyes can see. The strange feeling of her weak legs is gone, replaced by the familiar strength of a powerful tail and fins.

Her tail carries her along a warm current, her path leading over a gorgeous reef, the rocks teeming with brightly colored coral and the flashing of a million scales that covered the little fish dancing through the aquatic plant life. The feeling of her fingers trailing over the coral and anemones, the pull of a cheeky octopus distracting her when he surged from his hiding place to wrap around her wrist.

The dream is so clear, until it hazes around her…as though she were surrounded by millions of tiny bubbles.

The dream shatters. Flashes of memory spin through her aching mind, the rough fibers of a net, her fingers clawing to anchor herself on the reef, bubbles and fish surrounding her as she is quickly pulled out of the water.

The moment before a sharp pain pierces her temple, the last thing she remembers is reaching for a shadow. A massive speckled shadow that reached for her too, moving towards the ship she was now trapped on…

Shouting and gunfire rang through the air as Y/n slowly regained consciousness. Still unable to move without double vision, she blearily drug herself up to be sat against the wall. Her head pulsed, but everything wasn’t as piercing as before, and she felt her hearing adjust as she tracked the sound of many stomping boots on the deck above her.

Before she could discern anything from all the noise, the door at the top of the stairs burst open, the body of a fisherman tumbling down and slamming into the cell door. Squinting into the brightness that flooded from above her, Y/n saw the shadowy outline of a man draw closer until he was looking through the bars. She curled in on herself, shielding her body as his face slowly came into focus, the confusion on his features morphing into shock when he saw her naked and bloody.

“Captain! Down here!”

San motioned to her when more men appeared at the top of the stairs, a shorter man with fierce eyes coming into her sight as he approached and looked through the cell door. Hongjoong didn’t expect to find prisoners aboard this ship, they were just after the rumored gold being smuggled by the crew…‘I have a feeling ‘fisherman’ was a fairly loose title, apparently they weren’t picky about what they caught.’, he thought darkly.

Calling over his shoulder, “Yeosang! Come down here. The rest of you, search the bodies for the key to this fucking door.”

After several moments of shuffling and muted shouting, another man came down the stairs quickly and unlocked the cell door. Crouching in front of her, he set a small bag next to him, carefully draping a thick blanket over her naked form that she gratefully accepted.

“Hello,” he spoke softly, eyeing the wound on her head, “my name is Yeosang. Is it okay if I take a look at that?”

His deep and calming voice, along with his angelic likeness, instantly made her feel as though she could trust him. When she nodded slowly, he gently turned her head so he could see better. He grabbed a white cloth from his bag, Y/n wincing in pain as he pressed it against the gash in her hairline to stem the bleeding. With a deep furrow in his brow, Yeosang turned back to Hongjoong in worry.

“I don’t have what I need to help a head wound like this, Captain. We may have to take her back to the Inception with us.”

“Alright, Yeo. And of course we’re taking her with us, I wasn’t about to just abandon her on a ship full of dead men.”

Scoffing at their captain, Yeosang passed his bag to San before he turned back to Y/n.

“Is that okay? We can help with your injury and then after you can open your eyes more, we can ask you some questions, maybe help you get home.”

The pretty man’s suggestion was definitely better than bleeding out on the floor of a cell, so again Y/n slowly nodded. His smile was charming, grabbing her own hand to press over the cloth against her wound, his now free arms wrapping her securely in the blanket before lifting her easily off the floor. She slumped against him as her world tilted with the change, her vision fading in and out as Yeosang carried her up the stairs and into the sunlight again.

She tried to keep the cloth pressed to her head, but with her awareness slipping, her hand fell away limp as her vision went black. They walked across the gangplank to board the ship, the bloody cloth dropping into the dark water below them and sinking beneath the surface. Yunho watched it sink as he helped pull the plank back in, blinking hard as he saw the cloth disappear, snatched by what looked like a gigantic hand. He gazed into the water more intensely, but couldn’t see anything else move.

As the Inception began to sail away, only for a quick moment, Yunho saw something else. An enormous, speckled shadow, trailing under the edge of their ship, a feeling of fear growing in him at thought of what kind of creature that large could be directly below them.

Below deck, Yeosang did a complete checkup on their unexpected treasure, explaining to Hongjoong in a low voice that she had no other injuries besides the one on her head, and several scratches on her hands.

“She also doesn’t seem starved or dirty like you would expect from a prisoner. Her injury is fairly fresh and her hair was wet with sea water.”

Yeosang shrugged, Hongjoong gazing at her thoughtfully, logic and myth battling in his head.

“What do you think, Captain?”

“I think we’ll just have to wait until she wakes up. There’s no use speculating over it and coming up with the wrong idea…just keep an eye on her and let me know when she’s awake.”

Yeosang nodded, sitting beside where Y/n lay on the bunk and checking over the bandage he applied while Hongjoong made his way up to the deck again. Turning to head to the helm, he spotted Yunho standing on the railing, holding a rope to lean far over and inspect the water. He was so focused on gazing beneath the surface that he didn’t notice the Captain approaching.

Startled, he turned quickly when Hongjoong spoke, “Did we lose something?”

Yunho slapped a hand over his heart dramatically, “Aissshh you scared me, Captain, I thought you said you’d stop sneaking up on me like that.”

Hongjoong rolled his eyes with a smile as Yunho continued, “And no, we didn’t lose anything. But…I thought I saw something earlier when we were boarding the ship again, and now I swear…there’s something swimming under the ship. Something really big.”

His eyebrows shooting up in concern, Hongjoong looked over the railing again with Yunho, several minutes passing before the Captain saw what he meant. Barely visible in the dark water, a huge shadow moved within the shadow of the Inception, as though using the ship as camouflage.

Leaning back and putting a hand to his chin, Hongjoong considered the danger they could be in if there really was a creature below them that was almost as big as the ship.

‘Honestly, if it is that big, there isn’t much we could do anyway if it’s aggressive. But why is it there…?’, he thought, but before he could give Yunho an answer, Yeosang popped out from below deck again to tell him that she was awake.

The bunk Y/n woke up in was much better than the floor of a cell, but it still wasn’t right…this wasn’t where she belonged. Her head hurt much less as she sat up slowly, the dizziness gone and her vision more clear, but her memories of being captured were still fuzzy and her body weak. There was a strain in her throat, like she’d swallowed sand, and the only noise she could produce was an airy and choked sound.

Lifting her hand to her head, she felt the cloth bandage wrapped securely around her wound, a look down showing they’d dressed her in a loose shirt and trousers as well.

‘What strange humans…why did they save me?’

She looked up as the door to the room opened, the pretty man from before…Yeosang, and the man they called the Captain, both approaching her. Yeosang smiled warmly, sitting beside the bunk and inspecting her bandage again.

“Hello again, how are you feeling?”

Y/n simply nodded at him as she looked nervously between Yeosang and the Captain. Turning to look at him too, Yeosang said, “This is our captain, Hongjoong.”

Again she nodded at him, the two growing confused with her silence.

“Can you tell us your name?” Hongjoong asked, wondering if all she could do was nod. She shook her head this time after hesitating, looking down at her hands.

“No? Do you not know your name?”

She shook her head again, trying to speak but still failing.

“You don’t know your name? We won’t be able to help you with no information.”

Huffing, Y/n shook her head more and looked at Yeosang for help. He’d noticed that her mouth had opened as if to answer Hongjoong, but no words came like…she couldn’t speak.

“Wait, Captain…it’s not that she won’t tell us, I don’t think she can.”

Yeosang carefully reached out to her throat as she nodded with a relieved sigh, tilting her head up as he pressed his fingers gently under her jaw and along where her vocal chords were. Not feeling any injury or swelling, he shrugged at Hongjoong.

“So…you can’t speak, but you do understand us? Will you just nod yes or no to our questions then?”

She nodded. Hongjoong nodded too, thinking quickly about how to ask everything in a yes or no. He realized she could also point, pulling out a map of their route and unrolling it towards her.

“Okay, this is where we were when we found you on that ship.” He pointed to their general area on the map, circling his finger over the closest areas of land near it next. “Are any of these lands where they took you from?”

Y/n shook her head, pointing at the spot that Hongjoong had first circled, a spot of open ocean with no land for miles around. She tapped her finger there three times, looking at them both and nodding.

Hongjoong looked at her in confusion, “No, that’s where we found you. We need to know where they took you from so we can take you back.”

Again she tapped the spot on the map with no land, nodding more emphatically at him before making a catching motion with her hands, like a trap closing around something. Hongjoong’s eyes widened as he pieced together what she was trying to say.

“They…caught you? From that spot in the ocean?”

Y/n nodded, Yeosang looking at her in shock too as they realized that could only mean one thing. Slowly, Hongjoong rolled up his map, his eyes never leaving hers as his earlier thoughts of logic and myth warred behind his sharp gaze. ‘She can’t speak or walk very well, they fished her out of the water in the middle of nowhere…’ He sat on the edge of the bunk, giving in to his curiosity and superstition as he asked, “You’re not a human…are you?”

She hesitated before shaking her head, her fear of humans resurfacing as she remembered where she was. Yeosang rushed to reassure her, “That’s okay! We won’t hurt you either way, but…wow, that’s just…wow, okay so are you a mermaid?”

Y/n smiled shyly and nodded, the entire room suddenly rocking as the ship jolted, tipping sideways violently. Yeosang caught her as she flew out of the bunk, Hongjoong rolling backwards onto the floor and landing with a groan.

“What the hell…?”

“Captain!”

Yunho’s shout from the deck had Hongjoong scrambling to his feet, motioning to Yeosang as he put Y/n back on the bunk. “Stay here, Yeo, just in case we hit something else.”

Not waiting for a response, Hongjoong bounded to the deck to see the rest of his crew scrambling to stand again and look over the railings. Yunho walked up to him with an uneasy look on his face, shaking his head when Hongjoong asked, “Did we hit a reef?”

“No, Captain…the big shadow under the ship…it hit us.”

Sharing a look with Yunho, Hongjoong shouted out to Wooyoung. “Woo! Be careful, but give us a lookout. See if there’s something we can’t see from here.”

Saluting sarcastically, Wooyoung clambered up the mast and into the crows nest. As he looked out into the water far below, his stomach dropped at the sight of the biggest creature he’d ever seen just beneath the surface. Easily almost the size of their entire ship, it’s long speckled tail swayed side to side as it propelled its large form towards their ship again, very humanoid arms reaching to knock the vessel sideways.

‘It swims side to side…a shark? …that’s a big fucking shark.’

Tying himself to the mast quickly as he leaned over to shout down to the crew, “Brace yourselves! It’s coming back!”

The moment the words left his mouth, the ship rocked dangerously to the side, throwing the men in all different directions, some almost over the edge into the now frothing water. Hongjoong shouted to Wooyoung as he stood again, “What the hell is it?”

Scrambling down from the crows nest, Wooyoung waved his arms frantically as he recalled the creature.

“It’s huge, Captain! As big as a whale or bigger, but it moves like a shark. I don’t think it’s just some big creature, though, it’s too smart and it looked like it had…arms.”

‘Arms?’ Hongjoong puzzled, everything too fantastical for his liking today. He couldn’t help but wonder suddenly if there was a connection between finding her, a mermaid, and the giant creature? messing with their ship.

“Captain?”

He looked up to meet the eyes of his crew, all of them nervous that the creature’s next pass would throw them into the ocean. “Don’t worry, I have a hunch. For now, tie down anything heavy that’s loose and secure your life lines. I’ll be right back.”

Running down the stairs again, he pushed the door open to find Yeosang already carrying her towards the door.

“Ah, perfect timing Captain, will you hold that open?”

Hongjoong looked at him with a raised eyebrow, his eyes moving to her as they stopped in front of him. Y/n held his gaze, motioning behind him with her chin toward the deck.

“Why do you want to go up there?…Is it why the ship keeps tipping?”

She nodded at him, the memories returning to her when she was being thrown around in the room with Yeosang. The giant shadow in her dream, the creature below the ship, her guardian, her best friend.

Desperation filled her eyes as she nodded at Hongjoong again, his decision made as he finally accepted the unlikely truth. He allowed Yeosang to pass him up the stairs, carrying her onto the deck while the crew gathered around them.

“What’s going on, Captain?” San’s features were carved in confusion as they all watched Yeosang sit her on the railing with her back to the water.

“We figured out why the ship is being attacked, San. Turns out…we have something that doesn’t belong to us.” Hongjoong held his hand out to her as he and Yeosang helped her turn, kicking the trousers onto the deck and throwing her legs over the other side of the railing. Yeosang kissed the back of her hand gently as she smiled at him, Y/n looking to Hongjoong with gratitude as she smiled brightly.

He smiled back to her before she turned and leapt off the railing, plunging into the water below as the rest of the crew shouted after her.

Amongst the feeling of tiny bubbles against her skin, silence engulfed her.

As though she were a sponge, she could feel the familiar comfort of the ocean flowing into her. It swirled through her like a warm tidal wave, washing from the top of her head to the tips of her fins.

Looking down at her tail in relief, she shed the pirate’s shirt as she twirled in the water with a happy giggle, the sound bringing more relief as she regained her voice. Sensing the huge presence ascending from the depths below her, Y/n giggled again, turning to look down as she was engulfed by a pair of large, gentle hands.

Holding his thumbs as she popped her head out, the gorgeous giant rose into the sunlight, his massive form trailing down deeper into the water as his worried face was finally in her sight again.

“Seonghwa…”

The huge mershark pulled her close to him, pressing her against his cheek in a soft hug.

“Thank the depths, you’re alright…Do you have any idea how worried I’ve been? I thought I’d lost you, little fish. To see you captured by humans…I was too slow, I tried to get to you but I-”

“Stop it, Seonghwa.” She nuzzled against his cheek firmly as she patted his nose. “It’s my fault…you told me to be more careful in shallow water. I was too close to the surface and I know it’s hard for you to swim over the reef sometimes.”

She wriggled until he moved his hands back, shifting his left so she could sit in his palm, Seonghwa smiling softly as she planted her hands on either side of his nose and pleaded at him with sparkling eyes.

“I’m sorry I made you worry, Hwa. I hit my head when they captured me, so my memory was fuzzy until a little while ago, but I was saved by the pirates on that ship.”

Pointing above them at the Inception, Y/n could see the wavering image of the crew leaning over the railing, searching the dark water for any sign of her after she’d jumped overboard.

“I know…” Seonghwa lifted his other hand to place a now only slightly bloody cloth in her hands, her eyes widening as she remembered the first bandage Yeosang had given her. “I watched them save you from the fishermen. I wasn’t about to let either ship you were on out of my sight until I could figure out a way to get you off that ship.”

Deceptive for his size, Seonghwa gently brushed one finger against the much more secure bandage around her head, his fear and anxiety melting away as she smiled at him.

“Is that why you were rocking the boat? Trying to get their attention?”

Y/n’s smile turned cheeky at the sheepish look that crossed Seonghwa’s face. “I wasn’t trying to hurt any one, but I knew they wouldn’t go very far if they thought I was dangerous…”

Shaking her head fondly, she leaned forward to hug his cheek again. “Maybe not so dangerous, but you’re still my hero, Seonghwa.” He held her against his cheek a little tighter, circling slowly beneath the Inception as they reunited.

On the surface, the pirates all still watched the water with tense anticipation, Hongjoong hoping they hadn’t just let some random woman jump to her death. Just as he was about to jump in after her, Wooyoung shouted as they saw her head pop up next to the ship, waving at them with a smile.

“Hi guys!”

Yeosang laughed while the others looked at her in shock. The idea that they had saved a mermaid from fishermen was beyond anything they’d ever imagined to encounter at sea. Slowly, Wooyoung and San smiled too, waving back at her as she drew as close as she could to the ship and still see them all.

“I’m sorry, I really couldn’t explain anything without my voice. But yes, Yeosang, I am a mermaid and my name is Y/n.”

She smiled at the medic, the bright smile he gave her in return making her cheeks red. Floating out of the water a little, she held her hand over her heart as she spoke again. “Thank you. Truly, I owe you all my life…so thank you for saving me from the fate of a common fish.”

All of them smiled at her then, Hongjoong leaning over the railing more. “It’s an honor to have simply met a mermaid, twice the honor to have her trust us with her name. I am still curious about your ferocious guardian, however.”

Y/n snorted at the word ‘ferocious’, promising to introduce them as she popped beneath the water again. The pirates all scanned the surface, her head coming up again before she turned to say, “My friends…this is Seonghwa.”

The ocean around the ship trembled, Yunho and Mingi looking at each other in fear as small waves lapped at the sides of their vessel. Breaching the surface, sleek jet-black hair framed an otherworldly face, his beauty leaving several of the men breathless, the Captain most of all. The merman shared with her the pointed ears and teeth of mermaids, but his pattern covered almost his entire body, fading to a more human skin on his chest, neck, and face. And much to the shock of Hongjoong and his entire crew…Seonghwa was massive.

Easily able to topple their ship, his head alone stood the height of the Captain, several of the pirates peeking into the water to see his body disappear into the dim waves. Fear was the logical response to a being of that size rising out of the water, only Hongjoong staying near the railing as the others backed up slightly.

Awkward silence stretched between them then, Seonghwa raising his hand out of the water to wave at them sheepishly.

“You don’t have to be afraid of him, he didn’t mean you any harm.”

They still hesitated despite Y/n’s reassurance, the key to gaining their trust coming in the sound of Seonghwa’s soft voice.

“I promise I won’t hurt you. I wasn’t trying to break your ship, or hurt anyone, but I didn’t know how else to stop you so I could get her back.”

“He’s not all that dangerous, just very big and a little clumsy.”

Seonghwa playfully shoved her under the water with one hand, smiling fondly at her when she resurfaced just out of arms reach with a giggle.

“Thank you for saving her from that awful ship. I’m not sure what I would do…I’d be very lost and very lonely without my little fish.”

Hongjoong nodded when Seonghwa looked at him, watching them with amusement as he twirled her through the water while she held his fingers. Over the initial shock of the insanity of their current situation, the Captain found himself saddened at the thought that they might never encounter the two fascinating beings ever again. He hesitated to ask them to stick around, knowing it was dangerous for them to follow too closely to humans, especially Seonghwa, but he was so intrigued by the giant mershark that Hongjoong thought a part of him might actually die if he didn’t get to know him more.

Before he could struggle internally any more, Yeosang, Yunho, Wooyoung, and San all crowded around him. In a hushed tone, Wooyoung begged the Captain, “…can we keep them? Look at them Captain, they’re amazing and adorable and he’s so cool and she’s so cool and San and I want to go swimming with her and do you think he’d let us ride on his bac-”

Yeosang slapped his hand over Woo’s mouth, the muffled sound of him still rambling causing Hongjoong to roll his eyes. Seeing the way his crew accepted them he knew, at least with this ship full of humans, they would be safe wherever they were. Turning back to Seonghwa, he made his decision.

“It’s our genuine pleasure to have saved her and to have met the both of you, an opportunity as rare as much of the treasure we chase. If you ever need help in the future, or are threatened by humans again, please trust that we’ll help you.”

Y/n looked at Seonghwa hopefully, seeing a spark in her giant friend’s eyes that was more than curiosity. Smiling wide, she turned to the seven grinning pirates that cheered at what their Captain said, feeling the beginnings of a strange and wonderful friendship.

Almost a year later

“No. No…I swear Woo don’t you dar-oomph!”

Water shot into the air as Y/n was flattened into the sand by a cackling Wooyoung, San having hoisted said menace into the air in order to catch her. The shallows allowed her to out-maneuver them for the most part, but they were getting better and better at working together. She was still at an advantage, however, as Yeosang grabbed a wriggling Wooyoung off of her and threw him back at San. The three then faced off as Yeosang put himself between the mischief duo and Y/n, the mermaid swimming around behind him and flapping her tail at them tauntingly.

Standing tall in the thigh deep water and pointing at Yeosang dramatically, Wooyoung declared, “Give up the mermaid, you villian! We will stand for your torment of her no longer!!”

San sputtered a laugh as Y/n snorted in laughter with him, Yeosang bracing himself menacingly as he silently challenged Wooyoung. In a freaky show of telepathy, Wooyoung and San suddenly both zeroed in on Yeosang, the duo advancing as one and tackling Yeosang into the shallow crystal clear water as her laughter rang through the air.

The small island where the Inception was anchored had become their regular spot to meet Y/n and Seonghwa, the shallow water closer to the island perfect for Y/n to swim with the pirates, and the deeper slope of the island’s gradual drop off perfect for Seonghwa to simply lay on the soft sands with his arms folded under his chin to hold his head out of the water.

Hongjoong was in his usual spot, sitting in the crook of Seonghwa’s elbow with his legs dangling into the water, a book open that he read aloud from as he leaned against Seonghwa’s giant cheek. The mershark had his eyes half-closed in content, his heart warm as he watched her romp through the water with the younger pirates, Hongjoong’s voice soothing him more as he read him his human stories.

Seonghwa’s back was warm as well, Mingi sprawled on his stomach across Seonghwa’s shoulder fast asleep while Yunho lay stretched down his spine beside him with a book open, Jongho sitting down farther near Seonghwa’s tail with his legs in the water and his eyes closed as he enjoyed the sun.

He’d never imagined that he’d be so attached to such a strange group of humans, but the way his heart fluttered when Hongjoong adjusted more comfortably into his arm and leaned his head against Seonghwa, had the giant mershark deciding he would cherish the trust of these dear little creatures for the rest of his life.

stretch marks w/san

Stretch Marks W/san

imagine you and san lay in bed together on a lazy morning. the curtains are only just open, casting a hazy light over your barely clothed bodies.

san is wearing nothing more than a pair of plaid joggers that sit low on his hips. you on the other hand, wear one of his shirts and a pair of pink cotton panties. the shirt has ridden up around your waist, thighs on full display.

san likes that fact, perhaps a little too much. your thighs are his favourite pillow, after all. it’s even better when they’re bare and he can lay with his head pressed firmly against one, fingers drawing dainty patterns against the other. it’s no secret just how much he likes the skin to skin contact.

you sit with your back against the headboard. you have one hand on his head, fingers running through his short hair, tugging at the strands every now and then. in your other sits your phone.

“i like these,” san hums, tracing his finger over your thigh in the shape of a lightning bolt. you pull your eyes away from your screen to watch as he traces over a stretch mark before moving to a different one and giving it the same treatment.

“my stretch marks?” he hums in response. you put your phone down to give him your full attention. “any reason?”

he flattens his palm against your thigh and rubs it up and down.

“pretty…” he sighs as he leans forward to kiss the meat of your thigh, “they look like water does when it’s rippling. you know like when the sun hits it and you can’t help but stare at it for a while?”

he looks up at you with wide eyes.

“fuck, you’re pretty.”

you can’t help but crack a smile. not when he’s looking at you like you hold the sun, moon and stars in the palms of your hands.

“sappy baby,” you call him, running your nails over his scalp. his eyes flutter closed at the sensation, a low groan leaving his lip, “you must really love me…”

“more than anything,” he whispers as he opens his eyes again, “and every single day i find something new that just makes me love you more.”

he kisses your thigh again, and again, and again. it takes a moment to realise that he’s pressing kisses to every single stretch mark he can get his lips on. when you do, you giggle.

“you really like my stretch marks, hm?”

“oh, i’m never leaving these babies alone,” he cracks a smile, “i didn’t think i could love these thighs any more than i already did but you always find a way to prove me wrong, don’t you?”

you roll your eyes.

“you’re so stupid.”

“yeah… stupid in love with you.”
