listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.

I think it's the ALMOST canon ships that get the best, most intricately woven, beautifully told fanfiction.

those nearly-kind-of-almost-maybe-could-be canon couples

the ones that make it almost painful to live with the knowledge that if just one or two things had happened differently, just one or two things: if one of them had said something differently here, done something differently there, or if certain events had shifted a little, just a fraction, they'd have been together - undoubtedly.

you can see it. everyone can see it. but it's not enough - they're still an almost-but-not-quite, maybe-but-it-was-never-confirmed, kind-of-but-annoyingly-ambiguous

fanfiction writers take their potential and they hold it close and they lovingly craft something amazing and beautiful with it - finally giving them the chance to be together like everyone knows they would be in-canon if the story wasn't against them

they spring out entire novels from canon-divergence in the places where just a little step in another direction could have led to them being together

they build whole intricate Alternate Universes where the characters are able to meet in an entirely different way and still fall for each other

what I'm saying is that the insanity of a ship where it was almost-canon drives writers to a specific kind of creative madness that produces the best fanfiction....

Sadly, I don't have many recs for you. 🤣 Magic babies aren't very popular, I guess.

The Tale of a Hybrid and a Vampire by @idiot--wind is a sort of rewriting of TO S5 finale, so no KC magic babies, but it does rewrite canon and it is absolutely stunning (probably my favorite TO rewriting!). It also features Hope and gives her and Caroline the one-on-one moment I wish canon had given them. In the Backseat by Lila2 is a canon divergent story where Klaus goes to Caroline with baby Hope, clueless of what to do after having Hayley cursed, and it's SO good and SO heartwarming I can't even. It's honestly one of my all-time favorites. And lastly, this is a fic that I recently recced because I became obsessed with it. It is both a semi-magical baby fic and also a rewriting, but the child is not Klaroline's. Still, I urge you to give it a shot, because it's amazing, so so well written and the child (Gracie) is just a delight! It's called Wolf Club by Radioactive59.

Holding Out For A Hero

(Caroline is captured by a group of disgruntled witches on a surprise visit to NOLA. No magical babies of any kind and none of that Cami/Stefan nonsense.)

The door to St. James Infirmary opened letting in the early afternoon light. Josh set down his rag to grab a glass and a bottle of bourbon when he saw just who it was strutting in. He had just poured the liquor over the ice in the glass as Klaus took a seat at the bar.

“So? How was your night?” Josh asked as he slid the glass to him barely holding back his excitement.

Klaus narrowed his eyes in suspicion, “It went as well as any night in the Quarter with the blasted witches causing their nightly riots.”

“Yeah, yeah but besides that? How did it go?” Josh bounced up and down on the soles of his shoes causing the Hybrid to question the boy’s sanity as it grated on his nerves.

“What has you bouncing with such chipper glee? I have half a mind to snap your neck just to stop that incessant squeaking of your heels.” Klaus lowered his chin, the dark glint in his gray eyes showing just how close he was to following through with the threat.

Josh felt a tremor of fear lance through him, he wouldn’t put it past Klaus do to as he threatened and instantly stood flat on his feet as he deflated, “So she didn’t show up then? If she did you would be in a better mood or not here at all. I thought for sure she would show up.”

 Klaus groaned as he ran a tired hand over his face. He had come here to get away from the incessant arguing over how to handle the group of rouge witches, and instead of finding the peace and quiet he craved, he had to listen to Josh yammer on. “What are you blathering on about now?”

“Last night a few hours before closing a vampire I’ve never seen before came strolling in.” He paused to think for a moment before waving his hand, “Well not so much strolling as slinking in. She came to the bar, ordered a drink and stayed pretty quiet for a while but oddly focused on the door. She seemed like she had a lot on her mind or something because she kept standing up looking all determined to do something before plopping back down on that stool over there and ordering another drink.”

“I have no need for a play-by-play of the lady’s night, only what it has to do with me. Get to the point Mate.” Klaus hissed as his fingers flexed around the glass.

Josh’s gaze was drawn to the Hybrid’s hand wrapped around the glass. Gulping, he rubbed the base of his neck as if feeling phantom fingers applying pressure there. “No need for any neck snapping, I’m getting there but since she didn’t show up I figured you should hear it all.”

Klaus pushed his empty glass towards him, signaling he required a refill as he decided he would give the boy five minutes before the young vampire would be forcefully taking a nap on the bar room floor.

24 hours and 10,344 word later and I finally finished this one! 

A little forewarning to you anon, and everyone else. This has a very small amount of smut, nothing that I would deem NSFW by any means. 

BUT that being said, I suggest sitting down with this baby somewhere alone, somewhere you will not be interrupted, somewhere you can scream, somewhere that (if I did my job correctly) you can go through a box of tissues without fear of discovery. You wanted angst? I’m feeling confident that I have delivered! Now please excuse me while I run away and hide as I wait in nail biting anxiety at how this emotional roller-coaster will be received. So without further ado, I give you….

                                                    Even Though. 

“So, is this everything youwanted to show me?”

Klaus felt his heart stop atthe sound of her voice, hope filling him even as he heard the scratchy qualityto it. Even as he spun around to find her standing within the shadows of thefloor to ceiling open window of his New Orleans home, knowing once she steppedfurther into the light spilling out from the room, her face would show the sameevidence of her tears as her voice held.

“Caroline.” He utteredreverently, still holding out hope that his senses were not playing tricks onhim. That she had truly come for him, even though he stood so close to Camillethat he could hear the hurt hitch in her breath and feel her body give apainful shake against his side at how he worshiped this other woman’s name.

“Is it?” Caroline sneeredangrily in attempts to reign in her pain as she came into full view.

His heart began to crack andfizzle. He had seen her in different stages of pain, some caused by him, somecaused by others. And yet the force of her pain there in the open now was ofthe likes of which he had never seen on anyone. The devastation nearly equalto, if not more so, than that dreadfully, fateful day that changed the courseof his family’s entire history.

His mouth floundered open andclosed, like a fish chasing a hook, searching for it even though knowing allthe while it could be its last move and that death awaited at its sharp andtwisted end.

The room was filled withothers, none of which uttered a word. Some looked between the heartbrokenblonde and the quickly shattering Original Hybrid in confusion. Others withmenacing glee, others with sympathy at what they knew was about to come.

“Answer me dammit!” Even thehitch in her voice due to her pain didn’t take away from the pure viciousnessof her snarl.

She stalked her way to himand like the glutton he was for pain and anything Caroline, he still didn’tutter more than a croak as he stepped to meet her in the center of the room.The center of the audience that all waited with baited breath, in stunnedsilence for what would come.

Her head lowered, her eyes ablazing fire that cut him more than any knife or sword ever could as shegrowled with her demand, “Is. It.”

“No.” His voice trembled overthe single syllable word.

His eyes widened as hersnarrowed. The entire room sucked in a soundless breath, holding it as the onlysound that followed his reply was a resounding crack as her palm met his cheek.The force of it twisting his neck to the side, nearly stumbling before herighted himself. Not caring that everyone waited, some expecting him to drawblood, some expecting him to meet pain with pain. But none knew just how deeplyhis own pain was in the face of hers.

None expected the stutteringbroken sounds to be released from his shattering chest, “Ca-Caro-Caroline.”

This time his face was metwith her fist. Her enraged snarls beginning even before he could right himselfagain.

“You don’t get to talk! Youdon’t even get to breathe!”

Klaroline Fic Rec List for Ennie

A while ago when we were doing the fic rec ask game, @enniec123 asked me to make a rec list of KC fics from FF.net, because let’s face it, AO3 is much more user-friendly and the main haunt these days. That being said, there are some hidden treasures on FF.net, and I remember scouring through there when I first entered the fandom. So here the list is, but a few things first:

- The list is, obviously, purely subjective. About half of these I read so early on I don’t even remember what they are about, other than the little mark of star I left in the document title to suggest that I enjoyed them when I was curating my fic database lol.

BBC Merlin Recs!!

Someone asked me for Merthur recs a while ago, so I figured I’d start a list of various BBC Merlin fics I love!!

These are various different ships and friendships, I’ve tried to keep a little variety, though almost all of them are canon era (there are only a few that aren’t) 😁 Non of them are ridiculously graphic in terms of smut, but there may be the occasional small bits and pieces. Some have very hefty trigger warnings. Always read the tags, kids.

i've started watching merlin recently then discovered your writing and i am OBSESSED. i have a small self indulgent thing to ask of you: do you have more of the very specific niche of merlin getting stabbed through with a sword/dagger/whatever but being completely fine, much to the shock of arthur+the knights who didn't realize how powerful merlin actually is? i read the five part-er where merlin yells at arthur in the forest and the one where he laughs about it and kills the mercs with vines while saying "i can't believe you think you get to kill me" but are there any others you can link me to? i LOVE immortal merlin shrugging off mortal wounds while arthur and the knights stand in the background like "OHMYGOD?!?!?!?!?!?" i'll take whatever you have for me, your writing, your friend's writing, someone random's writing, just anything of merlin shrugging off getting stabbed. love your work and hope your day is wonderful!! 💖💖💖💖

My GOD I love that trope!! I love when he's a badass, I love love love it!! When he gets injured, mortally or otherwise as long as it's bloody, and he just... deals with it. Whether it's with a smile on his face or just an annoyed tick of the mouth before he gets on with things... I love it.

So, in terms of fics (other than Scary!Merlin, and Angry Magic Reveal) that have this trope.... I don't really have any. I've got PLENTY that have Merlin being injured and just sort of... shrugging it off, but I don't think I've got many/ant others where he shrugs off a mortal wound.

These are the closest I can find on my Masterlist:

7 Times Merlin is in Physician Mode, in the +1 Merlin has an arrow in his shoulder, and is trying to deal with it best he can whilst the others freak out. Though there's no bamf or angry Merlin, he's just kind of annoyed at the others making a fuss of nothing? (Around 8k)

A God in the Throne Room?, Ok, so he doesn't get stabbed, but he does get tied up. When he gets angry with the conversation he effortlessly breaks himself free, and turns into this... terrifying God, who has his “How dare you call my name?” moment, which is very satisfying and chilling. The others almost piss themselves. (4.8k)

Fae!Merlin, Similar to above in that he doesn't get hurt, but he suddenly reveals himself in a rather terrifying way. (8.1k)

Merlin is a badass, Merlin is generally kickass through this whole series, but in the third and final part he does get stabbed in the shoulder, which annoys him more than it hurts him, and he stitches up the wound and begins torturing the man who threw the dagger whilst the others watch on in mild horror (three parts, totalling around 22kish)

The Guard Dog, Merlin is in an underground fighting ring, and the others sneak in only to see him kick ass. This is more crack-y than it is serious, and there's no magic or near death or blood. It's basically the crack-y version of this trope, whilst still having Merlin being a bamf. (6.5k)

Now for fics off my Rec List:

Crossing the Line, Merlin's anger in this is definitely more of a crack-y anger. A whole bunch of sorcerers attack Camelot, and Merlin repeatedly has the shit beaten out of him before he goes "fuck it" and reveals his magic in front of Arthur. It's pretty funny, but Merlin is also very badass. I really love this one lol (4.1k).

no. Just…..no, Merlin's magic is discovered, Uther repeatedly orders his execution, and whilst Merlin avoids it best he can, sometimes people sneak up on him. Every time he dies he just wakes up again, rolls his eyes at Uther, and continues to serve a very baffled Arthur (7.6k)

A Considerable Headstart, Merlin sneaks away to deal with a troublesome visiting Lord, the others follow him. They see him fight, and win, against said Lord, but not without receiving an injury. A Druid comes along and helps stitch him up, and Merlin just spends the entire time kind of exhausted and annoyed and resigned. The conversation between the Lord and Merlin before the fight is probably more interesting and bamfy than the fight and the aftermath (14k).

Is This the Best You Can Do?, probably the CLOSEST to the trope on this list, a set of two fics in which Merlin, without his magic, shows off how bamfy he is whilst the knights watch on, baffled. In one he gets tortured and then kicks ass and breaks everyone out, in the other, he gets poisoned, it doesn't work, and he kicks ass and breaks everyone out (6k and 2k)

Hide Your Scars, Merlin's scars are revealed to the knights one by one, and they help him with his secret kick ass life. He accumulates a multitude of horrifying scars and injuries that he's just resigned to, but he still has to hide from Arthur (the only one who, by the end, doesn't know about his magic before all is revealed) (12k).

None of these are exactly like this trope, bar Is This the Best You Can Do?, but they're all pretty close. If you're looking for others, I'd suggest taking a browse through my Rec List. There's a real mix of pairings, length, and trope on there :D

I don't think fic writers know how much they matter

Do you know how many times you distracted me when I was hurt or lonely? Do you know how many times a line or a scene from fanfic marked me so much that I remembered years later, even though I can’t recall my own phone number? 

Even if the fic isn’t perfect or popular or multi-chaptered… Sometimes there’s just one sentence that changed me.

You, miles and miles away, changed me.

To commemorate Endgame’s two-year anniversary, have another rant (you’re welcome). Even after two years, something that troubles me no end is that, according to Endgame, Bucky and Sam et al. are just supposed to… get over losing Steve. That they were expected to just move on from the loss of their friend (in Bucky’s case, his lifelong best friend and alleged soulmate) and just be fine after a little while. Yet at the same time, Endgame Steve, who, roughly eight decades on, is apparently still unable to get over Peggy - the woman he kissed one (1) time and only when he was maybe about to die, the woman he knows lived a long, happy life without him, who actually told him to move on, and who he literally buried - is expected to do no such thing.

Because, of course, heterosexual romance, even of the blandest kind, is far more valid and important than every other kind of romance, friendship, and (found) family combined.

Steve and Peggy never even went on a single date. Never canonically said ‘I love you’ or anything of the sort (certainly nothing like 'I’m with you till the end of the line’). Fuck, Steve was even shown kissing Peggy’s niece not long after he buried Peggy. And yet we’re supposed to buy that in Endgame, Peggy is suddenly ‘the love of Steve’s life’, and losing her to old age devastated him more than the unexpected losses of so many of his friends - including Bucky, who he’d only just gotten back after years of looking for him, fighting for him, getting him back and losing him again - combined? 

We’re supposed to blindly accept that it makes total sense for Steve to then, at the end of Endgame, leave everything and everyone he loves to go back to the past, to a time that would’ve been horrible for him for so many reasons, solely to play happy families with Peggy? Even though Steve canonically told Tony in AOU that the guy who wanted stability and a family went into the ice 75 years ago and someone else 'came out’? Even though Steve fought the whole world to get Bucky back and keep him safe, gave up his shield for him twice, and would’ve given up his life for him without hesitation if the alternative meant having to live without him again (even at a time when Peggy was still alive, mind you)? 

The fact is, in the Cap movies we were shown that when it came down to it, nothing was more important to Steve than Bucky - certainly not Peggy. If anything came close, it was Steve’s relationships with the people he met in the new century, who he spent years living and fighting side by side with, and who, in Sam’s case, he canonically loved and admired enough to entrust him with his shield and legacy. What was between Steve and Peggy was canonically little more than a crush or mutual admiration/infatuation. If we’re supposed to take Endgame’s ending at face value, what Steve did was extremely out of character, deeply unhealthy and unfair, and most likely indicative of severe mental instability as a result of repeated and untreated trauma - not some romantic grand gesture to swoon over, and not a well-deserved happy ending. Apart from that, nothing we were shown in canon warranted Steve’s decision to leave everything and go back in time to be with Peggy in Endgame. And yet, that’s what the creators chose to go with, simply because it was the most widely palatable and therefore the most marketable option.

So yeah, Endgame’s ending is a farce and an insult to our intelligence at best, and a patronizing, cowardly, misogynistic, homophobic, capitalistic and plain awful mess at worst. And it is also one of the reasons why I simply do not vibe with canon any longer and I’m sticking to fanon forever more, thank you very much.

fan fiction is SO addicting to people with ADHD because our brains aren't innattentive, they're just constantly searching out sources of dopamine because we don't produce enough on our own. fan fiction supplies us with an endless archive of free stories - long and short - containing characters we already love and we can just devour story after story after story one after another and it feels SO GOOD.

has anyone else noticed how bucky‘s ,death‘ falling from the train in Captain America: The First Avenger is a direct parallel to patroclus‘ death? bucky takes on his most beloved‘s armour, his shield, and dies. and his death then in turn is the catalyst for steve‘s character development from ,i don’t want to kill anyone‘ to becoming the first avenger. it’s the same as achilles‘ rage after he had originally decided to stop fighting the trojan war. bucky and steve are the 20th century patroclus and achilles.

This makes too much sense.

Whether the writers made these characters with this trope in mind or not, this is where we’ve ended up.

I don’t know how OP put two and two together (I haven’t heard of this trope before), but a HUGE kudos and props to them. This is genius.

Well it kind of just hit me, and if you already thought of this good for you, BUT what if he also got out of it (because of/with the help of) the fact that he was looking down on a beaten/weak/defenseless Steve like he was ‘used’ to seeing back then??????

I really didn’t need to hurt myself like this but oh well...
