bbc ghosts and empathy
at its core, bbc ghosts is a show about empathy! these days, a lot of shows are black and white when it comes to characterisation- always having them lean towards good and evil. but this is boring as fuck!
bcc ghosts does the exact opposite by having characters such as julian, who by all means, was a terrible person. he was a tory with no respect for his wife or his daughter. by all means, we as the audience, should HATE him. but we don’t! infant, we love him. he’s funny and witty and comedic.
even before he grew to regret his past actions, we still loved him as a character because of how hilarious and authentic he is. after the christmas episode where he was looking after a baby, the audience was able to fall in love with julian all over again and for a different reason! even when we were shown explicitly the terrible traits julian exhibited while alive, we felt empathy for his situation. we do deeply felt his regrets.
most of the time, tories and bad fathers are the villains. and for the most part, it’s true. this doesn’t stunt their growth as people. we always forget that people we don’t agree with are people; capable of growth and fear and guilt.
in real life, this conversation is a lot different. realistically, someone like julian being in power is probably not a good idea. he was like besties with margaret thatcher.
either way, bbc ghosts has taught me a lot about recognising my biased behaviour towards people i would usually condemn. i find it so crazy that this show was able to make me empathise with such a person- but i’m very grateful for it. live laugh julian

i feel like james doesn’t really listen to music that much, more so just pick out a few songs that sirius and remus like and just go with it. remus loves elliott smith (despite his more ‘grunge’ music taste) so he would play a lot of his songs when he’s alone or just chilling out.
james would hear this song and be like “UMMM THIS IS SO ME CORE” and he’d listen to it on repeat for WEEKS.

this mother fucker is a radiohead stan. remus is the radiohead bf sirius is his blur gf.
he loves a little guitar riff and then absolutely nonsensical breakdowns in the middle of the chorus 👍
also i feel like he just relates to the teen angst vibe of it. he listens to it when he’s upset that he’s a queer werewolf from care home. so HIS ‘iron lung’ in that sense would be he queerness and his upbringing, or maybe even sirius at some points.

i feel like lily is a folk fan above all other genres of music. obviously she loves fleetwood mac, taylor swift, etc… but her loyalties lie with the cluttered, wordy and intimate lyricism of artists like big thief, clario and sidney gish.
lily listens to this specific song whenever she feel nostalgic or when she’s got growing pains. it kinda grounds her. she’s the type of person who gets so fixated on the past or what her futures gonna look like, so she channels those feelings into reflection instead. she finds a lot big thief’s songs do just that :)

this song just makes her feel so powerful and so connected to her friends!! she thinks it’s just so her. she also feels like her attractiveness is one of her best qualities (which isn’t true she’s literally the funniest and kindest girl at hogwarts) and one of her only strengths and she HATES FEELING THAT WAY… so when she listens to lana she’s like ‘mmm she’s so mother! she gets me!!!’

sirius and remus get drunk af and decide to go up to the astronomy tower for shits and gigs! but guess who’s up there??? regulus…
they’re like “oh soz” and they leave, but remus is kind of like “hmmm that’s weird xx” so he comes back up the next day without sirius, and regulus is still there!

they chat a bit more and it becomes like… a nightly tradition. a week goes by and reggie admits that he’s weirdly into james potter. he didn’t even think he liked men until he kissed barty crouch drunk and on a dare one time. remus is super shocked!! jaw on the floor!
but he’s supportive and he’s like “i get it lol. i’m down bad for ur brother”

they get a lot closer after that and they just sit and pity each other, regulus loathing himself for being so infatuated with someone he hates and talked to a maximum of TWO TIMES! remus loathing himself for letting himself fall in love with someone who doesn’t want to be seen with him doing anything slightly romantic.
they get very close and help eachother with school work, their crushes, etc… and they honestly become good friends. neither of them would admit it though.
regulus’s crush remains unrequited and completely secret as james starts finally dating lily in their last year of school. and then he becomes a death eater lol xx
remus is like “well maybe he was coerced into it!!” because he literally was and regulus told him so. but sirius is like “… no he is a full blood supremacist…”
remus misses their nightly chats after graduating hogwarts and when the news comes out that he died, he had no choice but to honour his wishes and their secrecy by refusing to expose their friendship xx
