22. âScoot over. Â I wanna sit next to you.â
---
Logan was used to eating his lunch alone. It wasnât quite that anyone had ever told him that he couldnât sit with them, but he chose to avoid the awkward glances and shifty excuses heâd likely get if asked to join a group. He was perfectly content to spend lunch with his sandwhich and his thoughts, thank you very much.Â
âScoot over. I wanna sit next to you.âÂ
Logan glanced up from his book, frowning. He barely had time to register the mess of brown curls and toothy grin that filled his vision before the boy they belonged to plopped his tray down on the table and wormed his way onto the bench next to Logan.Â
Logan recognized him, of course, everyone in school knew the Crowne twins. Despite not quite fitting into a traditionally popular, masculine mold, Roman Crowne had a large group of friends and was generally well liked by people. Meanwhile, all sorts of rumors about the younger twin, Remus, circulated through the student body, including a particularly gruesome tale about what heâd done to Eric Stone, a student whoâd apparently called Roman some...less than savory names. Logan was sure that the details were mostly exaggerated, but it didnât stop most people, himself included, from being just a little afraid of Remus.
So of course, it was Remus who had decided to invade the solitude of Loganâs lunchtime. He flashed Logan a smile before taking a massive bite of his own sandwich, and Logan swallowed, turning back to his book with the hope that Remus wouldnât intrude further.Â
âWhatcha reading?âÂ
".....a book.â
âYeah, I got that, Nerdy Wolverine, whatâs it about?âÂ
âNerdy Wolverine?âÂ
âYeah! Ya know, cuz your nameâs Logan, and youâre totally fierce, but youâve got this total Nerd thing going on. Nerdy Wolverine.âÂ
Logan blinked.Â
âI...must admit Iâm not sure why you think Iâm âfierce,â as you put it.â Hell, he hadnt realized Remus knew his name, much less noticed anything about his disposition.Â
"Uh, maybe because you completely destroyed that bitch Amy Shellenberger earlier in biology when she tried to say that chromosomes prove that there are only two genders? In front of the whole class?âÂ
âOh.â Logan felt heat rising in his face as he recalled the heated encounter with the popular girl in that dayâs science class. It wasnât like him to cause a scene, but heâd spotted Elliot staring in their lap with shiny eyes while Amy prattled on, and had found himself on his feet spouting off a counter argument before he knew what he was doing. âI didnât mean to...that is, I-âÂ
âHey, no need to freak out,â Remus said, popping a french fry in his mouth. âIt was hella cool. And if anyone gives you shit for it, let me know, alright? Iâll make sure it wonât happen again.âÂ
Logan looked up, and found Remus giving him an uncharacteristically serious look. Perhaps the stories of what heâd done to Eric Stone had more truth in them than Logan had initially realized.
âI...appreciate that,â he said eventually, and Remus smiled.
âFor sure, man.âÂ
The two sat in silence for a moment, then Remus nudged Loganâs book.Â
âSo, you gonna answer my question, or?âÂ
âOh,â Logan said, looking down. Heâd nearly forgotten that Remus had even asked. âItâs a book about the likely origin of the legends of sea monsters, giant squid and things like that.â
Remusâs eyes lit up, and Logan suddenly felt brave.Â
âWould you like to hear about the origins of the legend of the kraken?â he asked.Â
âHell yes I would,â Remus said, placing his chin on his fist and staring at Logan with rapt attention.Â
As Logan began explaining, flipping through the book as he went to showcase the illustrations, he allowed himself a small smile.Â
Perhaps from here on out, lunch wouldnât be quite so lonely.Â
Virgil: sorry I can't come to the party tonight
Roman: ugh! Why?

Note: the songs referenced in this fic are IDK You Yet by Alexander 23 and Love is Gone by SLANDER. Both of these songs make me cry and were the inspiration for this.
It was at midnight on December 19th when Romanâs soulmark first appeared. He didnât realize this until 1am.
Granted, he didnât know it was his soulmark for the first hour.
At first, the almost imperceptible steady beat in his head just seemed like a song that had gotten stuck in there. He didnât remember ever hearing the song, but it wasnât unlikely that heâd heard the tune at the store or on the radio and it unconsciously ingrained itself into his memory. He was working on an assignment that was due in the morning, a script analysis for one of his Theatre courses, and had begun to bop his head along to the music when his roommate walked in, eyes bleary and arms laden with books.
