For cosmere inktober, day six: "Cryptic"
Because Pattern may be the Cryptic, but he's not the truly cryptic one.
Not because of the pining/buildup in the first book, but because of the way the established relationship was written in books two and three. It's rare to see characters together, on screen, in stories. Rarer still to see them having problems that they work through, arguments, doubts, differences, and issues that they overcome because they love each other, even if they're different people. Rarest of all to see love that lets a character sacrifice their loved one for the world as the loved one would want, instead of sacrificing the world for the loved one.
SPOILERS FOR SP3!!!
Finally I could post those! It’s my fav among the four books.
DESIGN IS SUBLIME.

I am a Rithmatist for Halloween this year. I haven’t figured out how to get a good picture of my coat by myself and I don’t have any one around to conscript into playing photographer, so you get pictures from the Shadows of Self release that I’ve been meaning to post and not getting around to for a while. I made Rithmatist coats for @fbstj and I:
Since I’m a Rithmatist (possibly an older version of Melody?), my jack-o-lantern clearly needed to be one of Melody’s unicorns:
More pictures of me in my Coat under the cut.
I really need to do Melody’s circle tracing practice XD
Hello and welcome to Cooking with Kaly. I decided I wanted to make chouta. It was an adventure.
We know that the meatballs are made by mixing flangria with ground lavis, forming it into balls, battering it and frying it. To create these meatballs we therefore need something to represent flangria, something to represent lavis, and a way to put it together without egg (since eggs are unlikely to be used in cheap street food on Roshar.)
I happened to have ground turkey in the freezer that I had gotten on sale at some point. It seemed like a reasonable stand in for flangria. Given the range of ways lavis is used, I feel like corn is a reasonable earth analogue, so ground lavis gets to be corn meal. I mixed the 1.5 lbs of meat with 1/4 cup of cornmeal, 1 Tbsp chili powder, 2 tsp cumin, and 2 tsp oregano, formed it into small balls (maybe a heaping Tbsp of meat per ball? I didn’t measure), then covered them and put them in the fridge for a while to let the flavors meld.
Before cooking them, I rolled them in cornmeal, dipped them in water (some but not all of the cornmeal will fall off), then rolled them in the cornmeal again. I fried them in a thin layer of canola oil in a cast iron skillet until they were golden brown. The cornmeal gets all crispy and the flavors are great. I’m a big fan of these meatballs. (note:the plate in this picture is small, the meatballs are not giant. There are also a lot more meatballs not shown)
For the flatbread, I mixed 1 cup mashed potatoes (since tubers seem to be common on Roshar) with 1/4 cup cornmeal, a heaping 1/4 cup flour and 1 tsp baking soda. I kneaded the mixture until I had a dough that I could press out into a decent sized flatbread. This made enough for 2. Transfer the pressed out flat bread *carefully* to the frying pan and make sure you don’t try to flip it too soon or it will tear and be a mess. This made a decent flatbread. I think the recipe needs work though.
I used the pan drippings from frying the meatballs to make the gravy, but I didn’t have any good broth to use so it came out a little bland. I think drippings gravy is the right idea here, I just didn’t do it well.
Overall verdict: This definitely feels like street food. It was tasty and has the potential to be amazing once I get the flatbread and gravy right. Nomnomnom. It’s not going to win any awards for being good for you, but that’s not what this is about.
xkcd’s data recovery program gave me the prompt “Somewhere, this exists.” hehehe
If you have questions about editing or the Coppermind in general, I would also be happy to help/encourage you :-)
In the vein of wikipedia’s wikiprojects, I have recently made a few pages which will help people who are looking for a way to contribute to the coppermind but don’t know where to look to find things that need doing. They are a set of pages which list the status of various articles, so you can see which articles really need help. As a new contributor, adding content to the articles in the good or stub categories of your favorite series would be a reasonable place to start.
Alcatraz
Cosmere wide
Elantris & The Emperor’s Soul
Legion
Mistborn: Trilogy, Wax & Wayne, Crafty RPG
The Reckoners
Rithmatist
The Stormlight Archive (warning: this page is huge, there’s just so many articles relating to it it’s still not very usable)
Warbreaker

Ok. I sat down planning to draw a Sarpenthyn. You know, the critter in the menagerie that everyone but Shallan though was disgusting. And then this adorable creature came out and I’m so confused. What do y’all think? Could this be a sarpenthyn?
F is for Frillbloom. For more on frillbloom, visit the coppermind!
Frillbloom! As with shalebark, frillbloom is a family of plants rather than a specific type. Here is how I imagine a few different varieties, in both open and closed form.
In the chasms in Way of Kings, Dunny creates an insult poem by making the rhythm fit the song Mari’s Two Lovers. Rock then goads Dunny into singing it before joining in. Ashiok and I have been working on lyrics for the song. This is what we have so far, but this is a Rosharan drinking song and we are pretty sure it has many, many more verses, so we are releasing it into the wilds of the cosmere fandom to see if anyone else happens to have any verses to add. Current lyrics under the cut.
Dunny’s poem:
Hey you big buffoon,
you smell like a wet hog,
so go out by the moon,
And jump yourself in the bog.
Mari’s Two Lover’s (lyrics by Kalyna and Ashiok)
Gather round and hear
this tale I have to tell
of our young Mari dear
and the men she loved so well
Mari was a lass
Though Not the brightest sphere
She often cut her class
to a wander far and near
There she met a lad
who took her out for wine
But she arrived with Khad
and left with his brother Stine
Khad and Stein were twins
who looked so much the same
it was beyond her ken
that the two had different names
The twins had a tell:
two eyes of different hues
they were distinguished well
cause their eyes were switched, it’s true
Their town had a dance
And Mari begged to go
While there she whirled and pranced
Always watching for her beau
As she spun around
She fell/came into Khad’s arms
She was extremely proud
Khad had fallen for her charms
Then she came to Stine
And danced with him a turn
She stared into his eyes
Oh but still she didn’t learn
Khad had brown and blue
While Stine had blue and brown
But our dear Mari knew
Her beau was the best in town
Over in a lait
An axehound pup bit Stein
To keep up the charade
Stein cut khad with some fork tines
Now this song must end
I sadly have to go
But Mari and her men
Oh their tale goes on you know
Dear Cfsbf,
It has come to my attention that the current logo used on the Coppermind (our wiki for all things Sanderson) was intended as a stopgap measure when it was added five years ago. We are planning to finally fix this and to do a redesign of the main page of the wiki. If you would be interested in helping/being part of this conversation (you don’t have to know about wikis), please reply to this post or shoot us an ask over at harmonys-coppermind :-) Any interest?
A is for Axehound. As with dogs on Earth, Axehounds on are bred as pets on Roshar. For more information on Axehounds, visit the Coppermind page!
I sat down to work on the “Sh is for Shalebark” page and got the basic layout and text done. Then I started contemplating which kind of shalebark I wanted to draw. I’m bad at decisions, so you get this instead... If you want to know more about Shalebark, the Coppermind page is good :-)
Inspired by a conversation with Ashiok in the chat :-)

Hi, I'm auditioning for the role of Spook, Survivor of the Flames, and I'll be singing "Village Lanterne" by Blackmore's Night.
Because Syl would be fascinated by lava lamps and try to emulate them. Clearly.
All hearts that are gems do not glitter, Not all those with blackbane are lost; Slaves that are old do not wither, Rockbuds by the storm are not crushed. From the crem a fire shall be woken, From the chasms a new hope shall spring; Renewed shall be Oaths that were broken, Tanavast again shall be King.
Last night, taisharnumenore, Leinton and I reworked this J.R.R.Tolkien poem for the Stormlight Archive. taisharnumenore posted it with the Bridge 4 patch, but this is the scene we really wanted to illustrate it with :-) (I also tweaked it slightly so the 4th line doesn't completely break the rhyme scheme..)
J is for Jella tree.
"The basin was fairly well sheltered, the slopes covered in Jella trees. Their strong branches grew spindly leaves – long spikes of pink, yellow and orange, so the trees looked like explosions of color. Shallan had read in one of her father's books that the trees drew in crem, the used it to make their wood hard, like rock." … "Jella trees here rose high, their hardened trunks colored the light brown of crem. The needles sprouted like a thousand tongues of fire from each limb, though the nearest ones pulled in as she approached." From Ch 45 of Words of Radiance
Ok. Completely new post because the other one keeps reverting to the cut off version. This is my interpretation of Shallan's Lullaby from Words of Radiance. So far as I am aware the tune doesn't belong to anything else.
Hey guys. Iredomi posts their cosmere fanstuff over on sebrukiscrossbow and this includes a collection of lovely cosmere inspired poetry. This is me reading one of their poems. You can find the text of the poem in their original post here.
AHHHH I just discovered that somewhere in the convoluted process of getting the file from SoundRecorder to tumblr the first line got lost... Why didn't anyone say anything?! Corrected version coming shortly!
Corrected version can be found at http://kalynaanne.tumblr.com/post/111933243197/ok-completely-new-post-because-the-other-one because tumblr apparently won't let me fix this one *rolls eyes*
Ok. I figured that if I did the lullaby from Shadows, that meant I should also do Shallan's lullaby from Words of Radiance. I sat down and messed around with it until I came up with a tune I like, so, here, have another cosmere lullaby.
I finally got around to reading Sanderson's Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell (I've had the anthology checked out from the library for a couple of weeks). It has a lullaby. My brain provided a tune for the lullaby (I do not know where the tune came from, I don't recognize it and if it sounds like anything it was unintentional). Getting this file into a form tumblr would take was a stupidly convoluted process and I'm not entirely happy with the recording quality (I really don't know what I'm doing with recording), but, here, have a cosmere lullaby.
