In my mind, Dean always reminisces based on Sam's age. So, instead of saying "when I was 15", he would say "when Sammy/my brother was 11" and Sam doesn't notice. John doesn't notice. Meanwhile, all of Dean's dates notice because it is very very bizarre but they don't know how to point it out.
Eventually, Crowley picks up on it (after that summer camp with Dean) and he brings it up and you can see both brothers staring at him in confusion because:
Sam is convinced that can't possibly be the case and he tries to trace back some instances when Dean has referred based on his own age and comes up blank and then freaks out (and feels bad, because he's Sam)
Dean is fully aware he does this and he thinks it's the most normal thing in the world and doesn't understand why Crowley is pointing it out or why Sam is suddenly freaking out.
Crowley is so done with them both.
[I have an argument for believing this is the case. Dean is pretty much Sam's parent. Parents obviously talk about events based on their children's age (except when they are talking about events before the child was born). So on this essay....]

chaw. gouache watercolor painting
one day, Cody embarrasses himself in front of his General badly enough that he decides the only solution is to fake his death, forcing everyone else in the battalion to refer to him as Commander Colby, Commander Cody's 'replacement'
little does he know that Obi-Wan can tell that Cody isn't really dead, but is just too polite to bring it up with Commander 'Colby' even though he doesn't quite understand why his Commander felt the need to go through this masquerade
until he accidentally reveals his knowledge a month later by accidentally referring to his 'new' Commander as Cody, then immediately recognizing his faux pas and apologizing profusely for 'dead-naming' his Commander
'Colby' is so mortified that his scheme was seen through that he immediately fakes his death again and returns as the miraculously-revived Cody, and swears everyone to secrecy about the matter
which, of course, means that the entire GAR knows about the incident within a standard week
while Rex is busy making sure that Cody never lives this down, Fox decides that the idea is genius and decides to replicate it himself on Coruscant whenever he thinks a Senator is starting to get too familiar with him
this is why there's so many different named Coruscant Guard Commanders: it's all Fox all the way down
the Chancellor is baffled by this, but can't let on that he's noticed Fox's charade without risking revealing that he can tell all of the 'different Commanders' he interacts with are the same man using the Force, so he is forced to play along

absolutely!
10. that time connor wore leon’s hoodie for an interview when they’d barely been lineys for five minutes at the end of his rookie season (x)
9. that time they flew to Leon’s hometown for a game and Connor almost wiped out LEAVING THE ICE like a baby gazelle who doesn’t understand legs or something idk and Leon immediately puts his hand on Connor’s back to steady him and make sure he doesn’t embarrass the whole team or injure himself because Connor cannot be trusted with his own body or something (x)
8. that time when they’d just lost a playoff game and Connor got his captain on and tells Leon “let’s go!” like a rallying cry for the next game. you’ve got Leon looking thoughtful and hot with his full playoff beard, Connor knowing what to say to get Leon in the right frame of mind for the next game, Connor not letting him dwell on losing a game, it’s a nice insight into how they work when they’re not winning (x)
7. that time i wanted to do a fucking murder @ sportsnet because they cut away just as Connor was laughing at Leon so much that he was falling into him WHAT THE HELL SPORTSNET (x)
6. that time Leon held onto Connor and didn’t let go after he scored. like, you’re down 4-1 in the 3rd my dudes, there’s no reason to be cuddling this hard after a pity goal. anyway, i love it because Connor looks like he’s just taking a moment to breathe with Leon, like they’re so in sync at this moment? and Leon’s just holding on, letting him breathe (x)
5. that time Connor hit 100 points for the first time and won all the awards and Leon was so happy for him (and himself because he got a nice bonus out of it too). just to clarify, they’d already hugged. this is a follow up hug and klef is just skating behind them, all amused at their snuggles (x)
4. remember when Leon went to All Star for the first time and Connor was SO HAPPY to have someone with him and they were inseparable and then Connor ASKED LEON WHO HE THOUGHT WOULD WIN some competition, I forget what. Anyway, look at how Connor’s all oh you think I’m gonna win? while he BLUSHES FURIOUSLY like shut up Connor, you’re great and we all know it and more importantly, Leon knows it and validates your weird Canadian modesty and then, THEN Leon says ALWAYS and I would like to sob into a pillow, thanks. (x)
3. that time i fell in love with them. i mean, that time Connor fell in love with Leon. I mean, that time we all realised Leon had a sense of humor. I mean, that time it became obvious that these two were super close. i mean, that time they figured out they were hockey soulmates or whatever and no one’s looked back since. does anyone else bring out this side of Connor so beautifully consistently because whatever Leon does, I’m into it (x)
2. that time they were really happy they were finally going to play playoff hockey. or maybe they’re just super stoked to score in OT together because this was 2017 when it was a novelty instead of a foregone conclusion. either way, Leon’s screaming happiness at Connor and Connor gets to show emotion because he’s on the ice. looking at them, it’s pure joy (x)
1. that time Connor’s injury was way worse than anyone knew and Leon stopped to check in on him and CRADLED HIS HEAD SO SOFTLY AND GENTLY AND I DIED BECAUSE OH MY FREAKING GOD Leon doesn’t do this shit (at least not with cameras around) and yet?? it’s a rare off ice moment that means more than all the goals and celebrations and being totally awesome hockey players (x)

ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVS FROM LAST YEAR
Don’t think about malnourished baby Sammy. Don’t think about little four year old Dean begging his Dad to buy formula instead of ammunition, of four year old Dean burning himself trying to warm up Sammy’s milk. Don’t think about Dean waking up every couple hours after crawling into Sammy’s crib to make sure he was still breathing. Don’t think of little four year old Dean who used to beg to feed his little brother his bottle, now not having another option. Don’t think about baby Sammy getting sick and Dean begging John to make him a doctors appointment to make sure he’s okay. Don’t think of baby Sammy learning to walk with his older brother holding his hands, of baby Sammy crying when he sees John because he doesn’t recognize his own dad. Don’t think of baby Sammy calling Dean dad, or the fact that Sam’s first steps were towards Dean. Don’t think about the fact that the doctors were worried about Sam’s weight at that doctors appointment, and ever since, Dean has made sure that Sammy always had enough to eat, even at the cost to his own health.
Don’t think about twelve year old Dean collapsing on the first night of a hunt because he hadn’t eaten in four or five days, because Sammy needed the food. Don’t think about John yelling at Dean asking what the hell is wrong with him etc. and Dean just shrugs it off. Because he’s fine. And he ignores it. He shoves the aching for food way down and ignores it. So, when they go back into town because they hit a dead end, and get food at a diner, Dean gorges on the food, and eats half of John’s too. Don’t think about John seeing this, having a flash of worry but ignoring it because “it’s Dean he’s always fine.” Don’t think about Dean worrying the first time Sammy called him Dad because “no, no, no, Sammy, I’m your big brother Dean.” Because he’s worried that his Dad is going to freak out if he hears Sammy calling Dean dad.
Don’t think about the fact that Sam probably didn’t learn the word Mom until he was at school because it wasn’t something his dad and Dean said. Don’t think about Sam driving alone for the first time and hitting a dear and calling Dean because he didn’t trust that his dad would answer. Don’t think about Dean, sitting in some motel at 23 years old after a fight with his dad who stormed off debating calling Sam because he’s the only one who would get it.
Don’t think about the Winchester brothers as little kids left alone in motel rooms for too long, underfed, and unsure of when their Dad was going to be back.
