I know in the books it’s already like, a Thing that Percy’s relationship with his godly family seems to be abnormally good- like, Poseidon’s not dad of the year but he’s also made it clear he deeply cares about Percy and has tried to warn/protect him in the past, there’s been brief references here and there that after tlo Percy started spending time in the underwater palace occasionally, he calls Amphitrite his step-mom and says she bakes him cookies and doesn’t mind that he’s messy when he stays over, he brought back that pendant Annabeth wears, little stuff like that- but tbh I wish it would be expanded on more because apart from the fact it’s sweet, it’s also like, kinda funny? when you think about how all the other gods are just. messes. about family. like let me just SEE him interact with his family more, it has such potential. He casually mentions he’s meeting his sister Kym at starbucks later and Jason’s like ‘she sold you out to a giant that wanted to murder you’ and Percy’s just like ‘yeah but that was months ago and dad made her apologize we’re cool now’. Annabeth still hasn’t forgiven her mom for the whole Mark-of-Athena-Suicide-Quest thing and they had a huge fight on Olympus the other day, the first time they had seen each other since the war ended, and Annabeth’s complaining about this to Percy, who’s Iris Messaging her from the bottom of the ocean because it’s Poseidon’s custody weekend. There’s a mandatory parent bake sale at school to raise money for a field trip but Sally’s on a book tour and Paul was prepared to just quit after he set the kitchen on fire, only for Amphitrite to stroll into the school the next day and ruin every PTA Mom’s life. Percy telling his friends to stay out of the water for a few days because he called Triton a bitch in the family group chat and he just wanted them to be careful. Percy trying to figure out if a bunch of Greek gods are expecting Christmas presents or not and wtf to get them if they are. Triton wanting to get Percy back for the bitch comment but knowing their dad won’t let him drown someone so he instead shows up at Percy’s mortal high school and does The Most to embarrass him. Tyson begging Percy to let him help babysit Estelle. Poseidon showing up at Career Day with absolutely no warning and trying not to laugh at Percy’s reaction. Percy getting his dad a fathers day card like he wanted to do in SoM!! Like it’s a dynamic I don’t want pushed to the side as much as it is!!! There’s so much to work with there!!! I want more! 

Percy starts the chalice of the gods with the unwavering certainty that he is majoring in marine biology. It’s the only subject he ever excelled in at school, when he walks into the admissions office the interviewer doesn’t even ask what he wants to do, just checks the box for the courses on marine life and tells Percy that he’ll be amazing. Because he’s the son of Poseidon and how can he not be?

And he’s not even mad, because he loves the ocean and the creatures that come with it, it’s his “domain” it’s the thing that makes him special and it’s given him the life he has now. He has very few things that he loves that he can’t attribute to the sea.

Then suddenly he running around the country, trying to find this stupid chalice for these stupid gods who have clearly never cared for him in the slightest, because he’s two wars deep at this point and apparently “saving incompetent deities from their own mistakes” isn’t a good enough skill to put on a college application.

He’s in the middle of his quest, cursing the sky and wishing - not for the first time - that he was a normal kid, enjoying his last summer before adulthood, when he comes face to face with a young kid.

He’s maybe 7 or 8 and fresh onto the streets having just run away from his parents, he sees things, monsters and creatures that his mother and stepfather just don’t understand. He’s scared shitless, all on his own and he’s pretty sure he’s going insane.

Percy looks at this boy and sees for the hundredth time how the gods seem to ruin everything they touch, from entire countries falling to wars and disease, down to little kids - who are scared and alone in a world that will never understand them.

He tries not to feel guilty when Grover leaves to take the boy to camp, he ignores that it feels like a pig to the slaughterhouse.

Whatever, he’s got a quest to complete. The gods “guidance” brings them to a harbour and Percy has to go diving through the water because he’s the son of Poseidon and what else is he going to do.

The water pressure feels crushing and the fear of drowning is almost unbearable, a school of fish swim up to him.

They call him the son of Poseidon and Percy struggles to feel pride in the title. It’s what monsters call him before they meet the sharp end of a sword. It’s what Gods call him when they want to be condescending. It’s what an admissions officer calls him when she signs him up for a course that he’s not even sure of anymore.

He’s spent the better part of a decade being in his dads shadow, and he feels like it’s time to move into the sunlight.

They make it home in one piece (thank god) and Percy steps back into the admissions office in New Rome.

He thinks about the boy who would probably still be on the streets right now if it weren’t for him. Magnus Chase living a life on the streets with no one to help him. Annabeth leaving her home with nothing but a baseball bat.

He thinks about his dad, who probably hasn’t spared a thought to him in months.

He signs himself up for the social care course, and steps into sunlight.

one of the hardest parts about being a demigod that isn't talked about enough is learning how to blend in with mortals. yeah, you look the part. but can you act the part? case in point in cotg when percy reveals he has to consciously swim slower when around mortals. but what about annabeth who has to physically retrain herself from engaging in a fist fight bc she knows she can clock them easily and can't afford to get expelled again. or grover who carries iron pills because he can't just chomp on a soda can during gym class. the implications of demigods actively downplaying their god given abilities so they can remain hidden is a concept worth exploring.

I'm with the " Thomas and Martha were actually weird as fuck before they died" crowd. I like to imagine vigilantism is just an old Wayne family tradition.
