On 20 April, 2008, Brazilian Catholic Priest, Adelir Antônio de Carli, attempted to set a new world record for flying the longest attached to a cluster of balloons. Using 1000 balloons, Carli was said to reach altitudes as high as 6000 metres. At some point during this voyage, Carli disappeared. Balloons from his contraption were later discovered floating in the sea. He had equipped himself with a parachute, five days worth of food and water, a GPS device, and a phone. On 4 July, 2008, Carli’s waist and legs were discovered floating in the sea. The rest of his body was never found.

The deepest oceans have a way of coming up with some of Earth’s strangest creatures. But this unusual fish might have them all beat.
Meet Macropinna microstoma , a small fish who appears to be totally normal — until you get to the see-through head.
Macropinna microstoma is the only species of fish in the genus Macropinna, belonging to Opisthoproctidae, the barreleye family. It is recognized for a highly unusual transparent, fluid-filled dome on its head, through which the lenses of its eyes can be seen. The eyes have a barrel shape and can be rotated to point either forward or straight up, looking through the fish’s transparent dome. M. microstoma has a tiny mouth and most of its body is covered with large scales. The fish normally hangs nearly motionless in the water, at a depth of about 600 metres (2,000 ft) to 800 metres (2,600 ft), using its large fins for stability and with its eyes directed upward. In the low light conditions it is assumed the fish detects prey by its silhouette. MBARI researchers Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler observed that when prey such as small fish and jellyfish are spotted, the eyes rotate like binoculars, facing forward as it turns its body from a horizontal to a vertical position to feed. Robison speculates that M. microstoma steals food from siphonophores.

On 22 February 1946, Jimmy Hollis and his girlfriend, Mary Jeanne, were attacked in Texarkana, by a “phantom-like” figure while out on a date in their car. They were beat with an object and Jeanne was sexually assaulted with a gun. They managed to escape. The following month, Polly Ann Moore and Richard Griffin were found murdered. They had both been shot while sitting in their car and Moore had been raped. On 13 April, 15-year-old Betty Jo Booker and 16-year-old Paul Martin were shot dead. Booker had been sexually assaulted and had been found 2 miles away from Martin, and his car was found 3 miles from Booker’s body and 1.55 miles from his body, indicating the teens had attempted to escape the killer but were unsuccessful. There were at least three hundred suspects brought in for questioning throughout the killings. On 3 May, the killer struck again, killing Virgil Starks and seriously injuring his wife, Katie, in their home. He was shot dead while reading the newspaper and his wife was shot in the face but managed to escape and alert a neighbour.
This “phantom-like” killer became known as the “Phantom Killer” and the case remains unsolved today.
