Jude "St. Jude" Milhon (March 12, 1939-July 19, 2003)

Jude Milhon, generally known as St. Jude, was an author and hacker whose achievements span many corners of hacker culture. Her work with seminal cyberpunk showcases Mondo 2000 and Boing Boing, her work in cypherpunk (a term she coined, and movement she founded), and her righteous and mischievous persona continue to inspire.

Edward Barnett

In 1971, Purdue University undergraduate student Edward Barnett co-founded the Purdue University Black Society of Engineers to encourage his fellow black students to pursue engineering in a dedicated and supportive environment. The organization succeeded and grew, and continues its work today as the National Society of Black Engineers.

This is the December 12, 2018 edition of Off the Hook, the hacker-produced weekly FM talk-radio show I’ve been part of for a decade.  I was the head producer on this episode, and in it we talk about a few different news stories, but beginning at 20:55 in the file we talk about the Tumblr purge which goes into effect today.  Special guest Dr. Kit Stubbs, educator and hacker, joins the panel (this week consisting of XioNYC, myself, and Gila) to discuss the cultural shift, not just on Tumblr but elsewhere, and its effect on the LGBTQIA+ communities as well as people in all lines of work and of life.

This is the final thing I’ll be posting to Tumblr, as I’m leaving this site in protest of the change.  This has been a fun place to doodle and keep up with cool folks and their work, but I don’t feel right sticking around anymore given Tumblr’s part in making things worse for everyone.

My standup set from last night’s “Say Everything,” the talk-show-esque pub comedy show where I’m a regular performer.  We talked about my hometown, Hurricane Joaquin, funerals, and more.

Way back in 1999, I was attempting to capture frames from a video file on a Playstation 1 disc; I no longer remember which game it was.  The process of accessing video from a PS disc in a regular CD-ROM drive was unstable to begin with in those days, and it didn’t help that I really wasn’t sure what I was doing.  Instead of grabbing usable screenshots from the video, my wonky software (which I seem to remember being in Japanese with no translation available) and wonkier settings generated four 320x224 bitmaps which, while unrecognizable, were surprisingly pretty.

I’ve been saving the images ever since, hoping to find something to do with them.  I haven’t managed to find anything yet, so I stitched the four frames together into one image and am posting it here.  Instead of using the Creative Commons License I normally apply to my work, I’m posting this graphic entirely public domain and free of any restriction in hopes that folks might get some sort of use out of this old accidental digital art.

One thing I've been coming back to a lot recently is a song by Information Society called "Where the I Divides."

This is me getting some emotional stuff through my system by singing it to myself, accompanied only by a soft drizzle and some late-night/early-morning city traffic outside my apartment window.

A fun little fandom meme I filled in bit by bit on breaks over the course of a busy day.  I generally try to fill things like this in by doodling as rapidly as possible with minimal erasing or undoing.

My BFF Grey has a listing on the Internet Movie Database.

As you may know, if someone listed on IMDb wants to upload a photograph to their listing they need to buy a pro membership on the site.  While I couldn't do that for her, I did the next best thing: I redrew my Fairey-ish portrait of her in smileys, and posted it to her IMDb message board.

I can't help but think the potential of message board smileys as an artistic medium has barely been scratched.
