i can’t believe leorio fucking yells at gotoh over the phone using keigo (honorific language, v formal, often used for like…subordinate/superior relationships. not necessarily out of place for this context, if it weren’t for…the yelling lmao)

also worth noting that when gon had the same kind of conversation with gotoh, he used more formal language than usual (not keigo, but masu forms - he’s at about the age when japanese kids actually start learning keigo, i think) but only in the first call - he reverted to his usual speech pattern when he yelled at gotoh

^almost Literal Foreshadowing Begins On Just page 16, VOLUME 1.

^almost literal foreshadowing begins on just page 16, VOLUME 1.

Anyway, @godxspeed brought something to my attention that I’d never noticed before, and I’m pretty irritated with how the anime not only left out 95% of the first chapter in general, but also made things seem “happy” – like Gon as the “happy kid with dumb luck and positive upbringing despite XYZ…”

For starters, Gon had (obviously) spent a lot of time in the forest; he was clearly able to feed and fend for himself, and even had a small set up to dry his clothes, cook, etc. (he’s also shown washing / drying his clothes when they’re on the island during the Hunter’s exam). This is where he first meets Kite when he was younger, as well.

^almost Literal Foreshadowing Begins On Just page 16, VOLUME 1.

^ (more foreshadowing?)

^almost Literal Foreshadowing Begins On Just page 16, VOLUME 1.
^almost Literal Foreshadowing Begins On Just page 16, VOLUME 1.

^okay, that was uncalled for. don’t freaking lure a little boy into you by making him think you’re worried and then punch him in the face as he wobbles over to you, i mean what in the…(that scene always bothered me.)

But I’m only bringing all of that up bc of this:

^almost Literal Foreshadowing Begins On Just page 16, VOLUME 1.
^almost Literal Foreshadowing Begins On Just page 16, VOLUME 1.

^ Mito was drunk. (and i don’t feel like this should need proof, but you never know and i have some anyway)

^almost Literal Foreshadowing Begins On Just page 16, VOLUME 1.

(She was also the bartender at the pub they owned in the ‘99 version.)

They don’t even own a bar in canon so that’s like ‘99 trying to stay close to the story but not make it^ obvious bc it’s technically a shonen. And the scene above is pretty harsh and deep – i.e., her slamming things, stumbling away just after telling Gon he was abandoned, and then Gon having to clean up after her. (fucking sad, alright. that is fucking sad.)

She basically has a mini-bar set up at that table – just for her – so I highly doubt that was a one time ordeal, and it’s pretty likely that Gon had spent a lot of time away (living in the forest, etc.) because of it. (It may also be why she had to “fight” Ging for Gon in court – and I only bring that up bc I know it was a question and that’s just a possible reason, lol.) what also makes this plausible is the fact that Killua was the one who’d suggested going to Whale Island after Heavens Arena – not Gon. Gon even said, “uh, are you sure?”

But I find it so sweet and heartwarming how Killua had taken Gon right under his wing after they’d first met – like a guide, a form of support in the same direction he was going, that Gon had never really had before. They both helped each other below the surface during the Hunter’s exam.

*also - reminders from previous posts* Mito wasn’t originally going to see Gon off – he was both surprised and happy when she showed up. She also tried breaking his Hunter’s license when he & Killua came to visit. Like, really? //side eyes// does what he just went through to get that not mean anything?? (…or are you really just bitter as hell and still mad that Ging left?) I don’t know, but either way i don’t like the fact that the anime left out (basically all of it) and put Mito in a “better” light.

reasons why I think Killua is an extrovert, not an introvert:

Killua is a people person. He’s energized by being around other people. He seeks out external stimulation and social situations and he likes to be surrounded with people. I think that’s mostly obvious in the hunter exam, the way he stayed with the group instead of venturing alone even though he probably would’ve had it easier without them to be honest, but he enjoyed the company more than anything else. Well, he enjoyed the company of Gon, but I like to think he was curious about Kurapika and Leorio as well.

Killua’s outgoing, assertive and he easily makes new friends and acquaintances.

Killua said he became “bored” with working as an assassin - extroverts tend to find repetitive or monotonous tasks/routines boring and a turn off unless they are fun or have some kind of a personal payoff.

Killua thinks as he speaks, which is an extrovert trait as opposed to introverts who think before they speak. If you notice, a lot of times on the show Killua is shown analyzing and reflecting on a plan or a situation, and he oftentimes does it as he talks about it, like he’s thinking out loud. He rarely internalizes what he needs to say before he says it; he says it as he thinks it.

Killua doesn’t mind being the center of attention, he actually enjoys it. I think it feeds into his bravado. He has a flair for the dramatic, the way he fakes his loss in battle before he delivers the final blow, and he likes to catch the attention with his comeback wins. His little smug, victory smirks are the best proof.

Killua talks a lot. That’s not to say all extroverts talk a lot, of course, which I can confirm being an extrovert myself. It’s just that in a room full of people, we’re usually the ones filling the silence with words. And that’s what I notice Killua doing a lot, especially during the second half of the series. Once he starts talking or explaining something, he won’t stop until he says his piece. Seriously, the boy can talk. He always has something to say and he’s happy to share his thoughts and opinions with others. Between him and Gon, Killua is definitely not the “quiet” one. Gon might be louder when he speaks, but personality-wise, he’s more on the quiet side.

Killua takes great indulgence/pleasure with being the one in control and exerting his dominance over the situation. Being the “big doer” pretty much. (Best example is the Heavens Arena arc). Killua doesn’t strictly follow. Even when he easily adapts to the “go with the flow” attitude or when he follows through with someone else’s plan, he stills voices his thoughts and disagreements, and is almost 99% of the time the one in actual control of everything. He knows when to take charge, even if it’s all behind the scenes. While he follows Gon and lets him lead the way, Killua’s still the one holding the reins.

Shying away from sudden praise or internalizing his feelings doesn’t make Killua an introvert by default because extroverts can also be shy and reserved with their feelings. We all exist on the spectrum between extroverts and introverts after all; it’s not black and white. It relies a lot on our circumstances, and that’s the case with Killua. He internalizes his feelings because he wasn’t exactly raised in a place where he could externalize his feelings, that’s all. I’m not sure what his Myers-Briggs type is, but I’d say he’s either ENFP or ENTP.

In which way did the 2011 anime screwed Gon and Killua characteristics?? I didn't read the manga so this got me rly curious, i thought that the anime followed the manga pretty strictly ( aside from the Kite thing )

No worries, anon, I gotchu!

What I feel 2011 did was take scenes out of the manga but changed Gon & Killua’s personalities (while also leaving out v. important scenes in the beginning such as Gon meeting Kite, and Ging not actually abandoning Gon). Gon is portrayed more “innocent and kind” in the anime vs. being mouthy, sassy and a bit more introverted like he is in the manga. A great example of this is:

image

And! Gon was 1000% about Killua (2011, again, left out a bunch of scenes where Gon insistently worried over him):

(This is only a few that I had saved on my desktop.)

I also do not like how they changed Mito to fit the more “motherly” role when she lied, drank and tried manipulating Gon in the very first chapter. (more here) And how she took Gon away from Ging and lead Gon to believe he was abandoned when she’d actually fought Ging in court for custody.

Then there’s Killua–who is kind-hearted, sassy, talkative and more outgoing than 2011 portrayed him as. It’s almost like they manipulated the characters to fit the “kind kid befriends the sad, white-haired loner” stereotype when Togashi is literally the destroyer of all anime stereotypes. They also took out a lot of scenes/dialogue to Gon and Killua’s friendship whereas ‘99 kept them all but added hella filler (and even though Killua is a bit more “darker” in ‘99, i think they stayed v. much IC).

If interested, you can read @lyraklaude‘s meta on Killua possibly being an extrovert vs. introvert here. (I v. much agree with this.) I also have a bunch of manga!killua caps floating around here somewhere–i’ll try to find them and then reblog with links!

i love killua’s speech patterns so much because … it doesnt come across in the english subs very well but… oh my god he speaks in such a rough/“vulgar” way in japanese especially when he’s pissed. like you’d expect him to speak in a posh or slightly feminine way because of his upbringing or personality bbut no. he just yells and slurs his tough-guy words in his enraged little boy voice and it’s 俺/ore this and ore that. he does the thing tough japanese guys do where they slur their ai sounds into ee sounds so for example instead of じゃない/jya nai which is the proper fucking japanese i hate you killua he’ll say じゃねえ/jya nee and it slays my whole ass!!

even his speech style during the really famous internal monologue “gon, you are light” is… it’s more understated because he’s not angry he’s just reverent (he’s more “vulgar” when he’s angry) but he’s saying super poetic things in a sort of rough plain way and it slays me with the contrast like he’s NNNOT even trying to be poetic when he thinks that shit it’s LITERALLY what’s coming to mind.

@your tag: people write Killua so badly I dislike him a little istg

People depend on the anime for the development and support of their friendship/relationship while making Killua incredibly mean and rude af. He’s actually v. polite and respectful, and both Gon and Killua are incredibly close in canon. Sure, they argue and quarrel, but most of that is in Greed Island (and expected when you’re with someone 24/7).

image

^He’s patient when explaining things to Gon, he’s very understanding and wants to help.

image

^They both talk and agree before making decisions. (the CA arc does not encompass their entire personalities.)

image

^Killua genuinely cares about Gon’s feelings, expresses his own thoughts and even has open discussions with Gon about them. (first panel is another reference)

image
image

^He says “thanks” a lot. He may be sassy, but he can also be kind and respectful. (he even apologizes a few times to Zushi during their fight.)

They’re just so kickass and awesome together. I wish these elements and Killua’s different characteristics were portrayed more in the fandom/fanfiction.
