Oh I’m so irritated at how Lady Nagant’s story line is going but why is it everyone is acting like Hawks is a mass murderer for just showing up? Their storylines are connected so it makes sense. edit: augh fuck i’m stupid (AGAIN!) and probably should have noted that the japanese doesn’t actually say anything about rei or enji. it translates to something like “a cold burning flame that incinerates everything,” so it reads to me like a general descriptive statement that FOR SOME REASON incorporated the kanjis from rei and enji’s names.
You know, “canon is fake” and “reducing every vaguely sympathetic character in every piece of media to one of the same three generic archetypes for ease of shipping is a poor foundation for critical engagement” can both be true at the same time.

I read a whole article written by him were he goes on rants about Jewish stereotypes and claims we need to get rid of them to achieve an equal society? As a Jewish person myself, I'm a little taken aback that you advertise his readings.

also, the mark of great insight isn’t necessarily “nuance.” great insight imo requires figuring out when “black and white” positions might be appropriate and when they aren’t. there are no two sides when abuses are rooted in power structures, and acting like both sides are equally valid and worthy of consideration, or that neutrality is possible benefits the more powerful party. again, i don’t mean “collapse awful people into the category of ‘monster’ and good/decent people into ‘human,’” but yeah sometimes you have to say someone’s motivations and feelings don’t matter compared to the harm they did.

not to get too fucking heated but the way even the narrative tries to make twice and his valuable relationships All About Hawks, the way it continues to emphasize how hawks had some positive feelings toward twice (and therefore that makes hawks complicated??), the way it keeps trying to sell the idea that these characters were significant to each other beyond how one manipulated and killed the other on behalf of law enforcement, and how every single hawks stan capitalizes off of this—
it annoys me so fucking much -_- i genuinely hate this character and i hate anyone who finds depth to this shit or acts like this is somehow makes good narrative use of twice.
i think a lot of fic writers who are trying to stay in-character would benefit highly from figuring out some characters’ senses of humor and just… letting them be funny in different ways. ime i’m taken out of the story not during the serious and angsty moments, but most often when the writer inserts a line that they clearly think is funny but just reads so completely ooc for the specific character—polar opposite of the char’s usual word choice and humor, that it almost always immediately pings me as “something the author inserted because they personally think it’s funny.” more often than not i can probably tell when it’s actually the writer speaking, not the character, and it happens a looot with humor.
endeavor stans talkin abt the “cycle of abuse” but the only thing they know is how to cycle through the same damn arguments from two years ago😂🤡
ok ummm sorry but why are people talking suddenly like irl domestic violence victims get any sort of widespread sympathy or support??? like, for one, let’s just establish that it’s silly to complain that real, living, breathing people are being treated with more sympathy than a fictional character. but even that alone would also be completely wrong, because… rl victims are not treated well at all??? did we just forget all the victim-blaming, the slander, the cross-examining, the doubt, and the legal institutions that are weaponized against rl victims all the time???
if you somehow see someone condemning rl abuse but dismissing fictional abuse, it’s because they only care about rl abuse in the broadest and most conceptual sense. rl abuse is hated as a contextless idea, or when it’s committed by someone the person doing the condemning doesn’t care about, like some dude they’ve never talked to or some celebrity they have no personal attachment towards. condemnation of, like, weinstein, who most people do not know anything about nor care about, is not the same as popular support for victims as a whole. compare the reactions to weinstein vs reactions to johnny depp or even (god) joe biden. the difference is entirely in how much attachment people have to these abusers.
a character like endeavor makes people trot out an entire circus’ worth of excuses not because these people actually care about irl abuse as opposed to fictional abuse, but because the narrative gives endeavor a way of playing on people’s heartstrings and allowing them to nurture an attachment to him, which they will then vigorously defend even at the expense of his victims. they do this as well with rl abusers who they particularly like or have some sort of connection to. it’s not that ppl’s condemnations of abuse are either existent or non-existent—it’s that they’re frequently circumstantial.
please, let’s be finished with the insinuations that rl victims receive care and support or even, like, lip service that isn’t getting extended to fictional characters.

i think if i were to make a small correction to that post, it’s that i would emphasize that pedophilia is already normalized and that’s why writing about it for titillation does not invent the issue of societal pedophilia, but rather is the manifestation of and contribution to it.
for example, it is also true that “bury your gays” is not the cause of cishet voyeurism towards lgbt suffering and death, but it’s one way for cishets to stoke their own desires for seeing it; and minimizing characters of color in a narrative doesn’t create the problem of poc being overlooked off-screen, but rather characters of color are overlooked on-screen because poc are overlooked irl.
so it’s correct that if we got rid of every piece of fanfic or fanart featuring underage sex, the problem of pedophilia would still persist because it is built into our system and society, in the form of widespread child abuse, victim-blaming, and lack of legal rights for minors. images that normalize pedophilia would still proliferate in the form of "art,” in the ways that underage celebrities are sexualized and adultified (as well as their less-known peers on insta or tiktok trying to look older and sexier), in modeling, in marketing, in off-handed comments about “jailbait.”
by and large, societal abhorrence toward pedophilia goes only as far as an abstract concept—like trying to dismantle the wayfair conspiracy—rather than taking actual substantive measures that would actually protect children. that would require we didn’t live in a society that largely condones child abuse and abuse in general.
the expansiveness of the issue, however, doesn’t mean anyone should brush off fictional pedophilia because it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. part of being against pedophilia means being vocal against its normalization in all respects, it means supporting systemic changes that give children power to leave dangerous situations, and it means watching out for the minors around you. it means you have to do all these things simultaneously, and not just shrug your shoulders under the illusion that you are somehow not part of any system because you fancy yourself that way.
It makes sense to think nods to Frankenstein such as Dabi doing the monster pose are just generally for the viewers enjoyment but I think it would be funny and also in character if Dabi legitimately read and/or watched Frankenstein and went "oh that's just like me I'm going to make this my whole personality"
