Clean & Restore: Vintage Dr. Martens — Dr. Martens are one of my favorites because of their durability. Although, I think just as important as durability is taking the care to clean, restore and repair items that have led long and reliable lives. 

This startup is turning plastic waste into affordable housing

The company called Eco Domum, or Eco Home, is based in Puebla, Mexico. Founder Carlos Daniel González collects, sorts and melts down non-toxic plastics into a liquid, according to Unreasonable. That sludge is then put into a hydraulic press, which forms the plastic into hardened panels. It takes two tons of plastic to make one house. At scale, González’s plastic houses could be just what Mexico needs.

We used old windows to make a small greenhouse by the wall of the house. It works great, and it feels great to make them useful!

Speaking about alternative ways of growing things, have you seen the bottle tower gardens invented by Willem Van Cotthem? His youtube videos are a bit amateurish but the plant results look amazing. I prefer straight up recycling plastic bottles but that IS a neat upcycling idea and it's a water-efficient and space-efficent way of gardening 8D

A great way to repurpose waste plastic too, especially as not everywhere has plastic recycling facilities. The water efficient part is appealing too. Solutions like this would be helpful for people living in more arid climates!

Hey y’all! I wanted your opinion on something. My laptop for the past five years has died, it’s dead and gone. And I was wondering would it be best for me to just get some cheapo $200 computer and hope for the best or save up for like a $400 $500 computer that’ll last me for longer and treat me better? By the way I am like a first year college student who has access to computers on campus. And I already went to a computer technician who is backing it for like $50, so my files are not lost.

This is one of the oldest conundrums of personal finance: to spend a small amount of money on a bandaid solution NOW, or save up for a long-term solution later. We wrote about the dilemma here:

Personally, if you can get by using the computers at school, then I would save up another few hundred dollars to buy the higher quality computer that will last longer. It’ll be cheaper in the long term, and you’ll rest easy knowing that you won’t have to deal with another computer combustion any time soon. Good luck!

Climate change is such a huge problem, that is so underrepresented for the amount of harm it causes. The actual change in the temperature, extreme weather events, change in what we’re able to farm. If we ignore this issue, we’re ignoring the fact that we’re slowly destroying ourselves. We can’t ignore it. Yes, the major issue is big corporations, but we are the demand to their supply. We can make a change. Even little changes is something, it does help. Work to make a difference, work to be aware. Don’t ignore the problem, for the sake of our Earth.

gentle ways to help the earth

• bring your own bags to the market

• always recycle (simple but very effective)

•use a menstrual cup (goddesses, TRUST me)

• use a reusable water bottle

• use the same towel more than once (i typically pick one towel and use it for my shower for a week instead of using a different one every day) EDIT: yes, a LOT of people use a different towel everyday, i’ve been getting a lot of comments about this..

• unplug everything (instead of just turning off the lamp, unplug it)

• if you see trash, pick it up

• go thrifting

• donate (clothes, furniture, shoes, etc.)

• skip the paper receipt and get it sent to your email instead

• buy local

• open the windows instead of using a/c

• fill your house with plants
