self discovery...

So, in response to the last ask, I said I would do some research, and I did.

I spoke to the diamonds and did some of my own personal research. And I discovered that blue Sunstone is another name they used for blue goldstone, similar to how pink diamond called pyrite fools gold. Yet there’s also orange goldstone, so that logic really doesn’t make any sense. They thought me thinking I was a sunstone wouldn’t matter in the long run... I’m upset with them.

And while making the discovery that I’m technically a blue goldstone, yet I look and act like a sunstone, was definitely a shock that I definitely still need to process. Both mentally and emotionally. Though it does explain why my gem doesn’t look like usual sunstone gems.

I’ve decided to still call myself blue Sunstone, despite being a blue goldstone, due to it being another name for it. I’ve only known that name, so I will stick to it, despite me now knowing what I truly am.

I’m definitely going to need a nap after this post, still recovering from the shock after all. Can’t believe I was created think I was a sunstone... why?

And please, continue to call me blue Sunstone. Unless an ask has to do directly with my gem type, I prefer to be called blue Sunstone.

So you’re a goldstone? Blue sunstone isn’t an actual gem! I love the plagioclase feldspar groups (aaah labradorite my beloved) and there’s not actually a natural formation of blue sunstone, since it’s characterised by its brown/red/pink/yellow colour and it usually has stripes of host rock in it rather than it being one consistent sparkling piece! Look into it, I recommend it! (as goes the gem collector rule: if it looks too good to be true it probably is! No shame in it bein goldstone, just that your blog title is incorrect!)

“Huh? But I was told by the diamonds that I’m a blue Sunstone. Were they wrong? I’m going to have to look into this and talk to the diamonds. Maybe blue Sunstone is another name for that? Definitely going to have to some research... thank you for bringing this to my attention, I think?”

Strawberry battlefield!

One of the places I visited was a place called strawberry battlefield! It was really cool and pretty. There were so many weapons of different sizes scattered everywhere! Some were so big, they must have been wielded by a massive fusion!

I even tried some of the strawberries. Unfortunately, most of them, at least the ones I tried, tasted like metal and rust. But, some tasted good, so that was nice.

I got help from the crystal gem lapis with getting up on some of the floating platforms. They were cool and I wonder how they even float. I got a little nervous after a while, but that’s probably from me accidentally looking over the edge of a really high one.

Overall, that place was great and super pretty, and I definitely want to learn about the history of this place!

Feeling a tad bit guilty for being so forward--they knew they wouldn’t have wanted someone to hug them like that--Callisto let go of the guy and took the invitation to dig in, snatching the little paper sack back up and digging into it, pulling out one of the few food items in it. It was glittery to te point of looking inedible, but Callisto started in on it anyways.

“What’s your name, mister?” They had to admit, they were pretty curious about this monster. Not too many others had worried much about Callisto’s well-being, and help wasn’t something they’d come by too often in their trip Underground. Besides... Maybe he could be a friend.

While they waited for his answer, they continued to wolf down the burger like it was the first thing they’d eaten in weeks. And to be fair, it was actually the most substantial thing they had eaten that week.

At first he tried to play off the kid’s gratitude - sure he’d risked his job and all, but Burgerpants planned to brush it off like it was nothing. Just a couple burgers and a steak. That cost seven hundred and forty gold in total.

“It’s nothin’-” Then they hugged him. His first instinct was to seize up - his fur stood on end and he held his arms high above them, stock still, gaping down like a catfish. Every muscle in his body was tense and rigid in shock. It wasn’t everyday (or any day honestly) that he was embraced, especially so graciously.

“Uh…Yeah, little buddy.” After a second BP relaxed. His arms lowered, hovering at his sides hesitantly before he completely eased up. It was still awkward of course but it wasn’t so bad. A little affection and appreciation went a long way for a grizzled, exhausted guy like him.

It was a hell of a lot better than getting whacked by his boss with a newspaper, that was for sure.

Patting their head gingerly once, twice, he motioned towards their food. “It’s no problem. Go ahead and dig in, kid. I can stick around for a couple more minutes, make sure dogs don’t try an’ snatch it up or something while you eat.”

Callisto did their best to squeeze Gaster back, but they weren’t too strong. Besides, he was letting them down now, anyways. They stumbled back a bit dizzily, still laughing.

“That’s okay, I do too,” they huffed. Their cheeks were a little sore from smiling so hard, too, and their stomach ached from the laughter, though both feelings were pleasant. They hadn’t smiled so hard in awhile either.

“I’m excited, though! I didn’t think anyone would take me seriously.” They rock on their heels, standing straighter than they had before. Pride was swelling in their chest; it seemed that despite their many shortcomings when it came to science, they had finally thought up something brilliant.

“Well if we are friends then consider a token of friendship!”

It had been ages since so much hope had flourished within the ancient monster; a child’s laughter had never been sweeter, and his cheeks had never been so sore from grinning.

A while had passed since Gaster last received a hug as well. Eventually his circling steps slowed until he was left standing still. He squeezed the child tightly, hoping that such a simple act as an embrace could convey his gratitude. “Thank you so much, dear Callisto.”

After a moment he set them down. Gaster was no less ecstatic but for Callisto’s sake he thought it best to put them down before he spun the both of them into the river.

One of many hovering hands patted their head affectionately. “I hope I didn’t dizzy you too much,” He commented wryly, “I tend to get caught up in the excitement of things.”

“I suppose my day was alright. There wasn’t anything unusual about it… Just the same old sort of thing…. Talking to you made it a lot better, though! I don’t get to talk to anyone much, since most the other souls stick around Asgore–God knows why. Don’t they know they can leave?”

Callisto blinked. Of all the things he could’ve done… Well, that explanation was unexpected, to say the least. The child sat upright, looking down at their furry friend.

“You’re serious? A dog? You ate the Queen of France’s dog?” They were a little disturbed, yes, but also… Almost impressed. As if they couldn’t believe Gaster would do something so vile.

“If you came to my house when we get out of here, would you eat my dog too? I mean, he’s pretty big, but…” The wide grin on their face told they were teasing; of course they didn’t really think Gaster would eat their dog. Callisto wouldn’t let it happen, anyways. Noticing that their glasses had slid a little down their nose, they habitually pushed the glasses back up.

curiositics

It sounded like a fairytale. Callisto laughed, and its soft tinkle rippled through the echo flowers quietly. Though their giggles quickly subsided, they were left with a broad smile.

“You’ve got to be kidding me! What’d you do to the Queen to make her so mad?”

They folded their hands neatly, resting them on the flat of their stomach and watched the little gnats buzz about above them. Gaster had a lot more stories than Callisto had excepted; though if they were honest, they weren’t whatthey’d expected in the first place.

“Well, I…” There was no fairytale magic in this particular story - Gaster, for once, was abashed in the face of a question. He bowed his head, scratching his ruffled fur self-consciously.

“It’s rather…embarrassing. I had only recently arrived after a lengthy trip and I was headed for the castle when I spotted a furry creature romping around.” The royal scientist cleared his throat before continuing. “It’d been days since my last meal and…well. I ate it.”

Gaster laughed, albeit nervously, and the echoes of the plants were almost mocking. “I found out later that it was the Queen’s escaped pet dog. As you could imagine she wasn’t too pleased when I admitted to it. To make up for it I built her a new pet but still. She held a grudge against me for the longest time.”

It occured to Callisto--perhaps a bit belatedly--that they really shouldn’t have gone on ahead without Gaster. He was much more confident, smart, composed--

“H-Hey, come on, just listen. Please,” They held their notebook out, open to their notes. “Look, it’s--I have a plan, sir--”

Asgore didn’t even look like he’d heard them. Callisto threw themself to the ground to attempt to avoid Asgore’s trident, though they did end up with a rather nasty gash on their bicep and a complimentary tear in the sleeve of their sweater. Their journal was dropped, loose pages scattering across the bed of flowers. They first grabbed at the wound, but all that did was get blood all over their hands.

Callisto still scrambled to gather up what they could, and stood again, eyes watery with tears. They took a shaky breath, sniffling a bit and readjusting their glasses. It was their turn to make a move, after all. Quivering, they flipped back to where they had furiously scribbled all of Gaster’s important points--why this was more efficient, why it was better, what good it’d do in the long run--and took another breath. A few stray tears slipped out, but Callisto dashed them away quickly.

Gaster would not be shaking in his boots.

Gaster would’ve convinced Asgore to discuss this over a steaming cup of tea by now.

I’m going to die. The thought was sudden; unwelcome. Callisto pushed it away.

“You s-see, if you would a-allow me to explain... Y-You don’t h-have to hurt anyone, sir.” Their voice cracked, trembling. They were terrified, and it was clear for everyone to see. Being so easily read was only making them more afraid, though. Would that make them lose their credibility?

“I can just g-go back home, and bring back my foster parents, and... And...”

I’m going to die.

The hesitation was all Asgore needed to make his move again, this time opening another deep wound on their calf. Callisto dropped to their knees, but kept the journal clutched tight to their chest.

“W-Wait,” They whimpered softly. “Please,”

Dark red was staining the buttercups underneath them. They were going to die.

The sudden sound of frantic footsteps turned their head, back towards the long hallway they’d come down to get here. In the tall archway--

“Gaster?” Journal dropping, Callisto dragged themself to their feet, turning their back to Asgore. They were so relieved. He was here, he was going to tell Asgore it was all okay, and Callisto could go home. They could fix this all.

“You... You came for m-me?”

Three metal points, coated with a viscous, red substance--was that their blood?--sprouted from their chest. Callisto’s eyes flickered from their friend briefly to look down. It didn’t look real. Confused, they looked back up to Gaster. They couldn’t read his expression. Asgore must’ve yanked back on the trident because now they were lying on their back with three gaping holes in their chest, struggling to breathe. Gasping for air, their hand started to look for their journal. It must’ve fallen nearby--

“Callisto,” Oh, no. No no no no.

"Oh... Oh my god,” There was a pressure on their chest. He must’ve been trying to stanch the bleeding. Callisto had a vague feeling of guilt; blood stains would be hard to get out of his white fur. At least it’d grow out.

“Sorry,” It came out garbled. It hurt. Everything hurt. Callisto was afraid.

There were dozens of assurances that it was okay, that it wasn’t their fault, but they started crying anyways. They should’ve listened.

“Am I dying?”

“No, no, you aren’t dying. We’ll fix you up, Little Moon.” Callisto let out a short sob. He was wrong. Weakly, they pushed his paws off their chest--the blood was just soaking through anyways--and gripped a furry paw tightly in their hand, trying to look him directly in the eyes for once. Their breath rattled in out out raggedly, and when they tried to speak again, all that came out was blood. They sucked in a breath; they sucked in blood. They couldn’t breathe, they couldn’t breathe. They struggled, free hand gripping at the bloody buttercups underneath them, as if by holding onto something solid, something real, they could stay. They had to stay.

They had to tell him--

Callisto’s eyes rolled back, tensed muscles gradually loosening.

Their blood-stained hand let go of Gaster’s.

“I have been to France several times actually. When I was, oh, six hundred or so I was constantly traveling. France, Persia, Ireland, Denmark - I could never stay in one place for long. I favoured France most however.”

With fond memories in mind he waved leisurely in the air, tiny insects and specks of light flitting around his paw. “I met a few of their monarchs as well. Some were..more hospitable than others. I was almost beheaded by a Queen once, but fortunately the King managed to convince her to not sentence me to death.” Despite it being more of dire situation the monster simply chuckled, light hearted as ever.

“I was good friends with that King, and his own royal scientist as well. I visited as often as I could and my French wasn’t too insulting by then.”

“Merci, Monsieur.” Callisto grinned; their pronunciations weren’t perfect, they knew, but the encouragement felt nice.

“Where’d you learn French, anyways? Did you go to France or something?” They asked, pulling out their pencil to absently twirl it around their fingers. They knew Gaster was old--very old. Someone so old must’ve done some rather amazing things in their life.

He’d... He’d must’ve seen a lot of things Callisto had only read about.

Continued from here: X

@curiositics

Gaster nodded, pleased that they’d caught on rather quickly. The bio-luminescent flora beneath them, true to their name sake, echoed back to them as if praising the child’s success.

“Oui. You’re a quick learner, young one. It took myself quite some time to pronounce even a simple phrase like that correctly.” The monster’s throatier accent, though now fine tuned after years of practice, had taken time to adjust to the silken flow of the language.

Pride swelled in his soul, twinkling on his smile like the gems high above. “ Très bien. Very good.”

It was a little worrying to see Gaster so blank looking. At first, Callisto had thought he’d tell them it was a silly idea; that there was no way they could guarantee that they could find anyone else to come back with them, that they couldn’t even guarantee that they weren’t just using this to get out of the Underground scot-free.

Callisto felt their heart leap at how excited Gaster was, smiling widely as he bounced. A genius. They were a genius! It made them bounce a little too, though less animated than Gaster. Not having to think of anyone else dying for this was making them feel a lot better--and knowing Asgore didn’t want to kill them was relieving.

They laughed as they were lifted off their feet, wrapping their arms around Gaster’s neck and hugging him tightly in return. Burying their face in the crook of his neck, they let their laughter collapse into joyful giggles.

“You don’t h-have to repay me,” They managed to splutter out, “it’s what friends are for!” They squeezed their eyes shut to avoid getting dizzy, though it was a little late for that.

The thought that all their poorly-executed backyard experiments would be a thing of the past, though, was extremely excited nonetheless. And not having to put out the money for a telescope would be nice, too.

For a minute he was entirely devoid of expression. Gaster blankly blinked at the child, his mind processing their plan.

“Callisto…You’re a genius!” All at once the scientist all but bounced with elation, laughter bright and buoyant, wistfulness lost in light of the thought of freedom.

“I’ve never thought of that before! No one has! With all that’s happened, no one’s even considered a human willing to set us free, but you, Callisto, you are a genius! An absolute genius!” He was gesturing passionately, a myriad of other hands popping up and following along in fervor. “No one else will have to die and we’ll be free to see the stars and feel the wind! Asgore must listen to you, dear young one, he must! He loathes the death of others more than any monster, you know.”

Gaster snapped his fingers at a sudden thought; the hands behind, beside, and all around him snapped in sync. “We’ll have to study a bit of course - cold, hard facts will convince anyone that your plan will surely work - but I’m certain it would work!”

Again, he laughed, the joyous sound resonating throughout the bundles of echo flowers, and twisted around to face Callisto once more. “And once the barrier is no more I’ll give you a telescope! One made by myself - it’ll be better than anything money could buy, I promise you. Oh, dear child, you have no idea how happy this makes me!”

With hardly a second thought Gaster plucked Callisto off the ground and spun them ‘round and ‘round, mirth warm in his grin. “We’ll go star gazing together! I can always assist you with any lab equipment, and anything else you need! It’d be the least I could do to repay you, once you set us all free!”

@bloomingasters

They lay in a patch on echo flowers next to Gaster, staring up at the crystalline stars. There are no recognizable constellations, but... Callisto finds that they don’t particularly mind. It’s a little cold, and they’re no longer afraid of the boss monster, so they’ve snuggled into his side a bit, still laying on their back.

The soft trickling of the stream and the distant hum of the waterfalls beyond this point soothes them, and they close their eyes slowly. Callisto is imagining a much different night sky. They draw lines for Cassiopeia, Ursa Major, Capricornus, Pices, Orion, Virgo, Cygnus, Perseus--

“So... Bonjour, je m’appelle Callisto, right?” Callisto opened their eyes, glancing over at Gaster through their peripheral to check for his approval.

“Dad? Is that really you?” He must’ve not had a lot of time. Now wasn’t the time for stupid questions!

“Y-Yeah, I’ll do that! I promise! I mean, he probably knows them already–but maybe he doesn’t remember! I’ll tell him all the stories about them, too, and… And I’ll get a new telescope too, ‘cause, I…” They couldn’t see him anywhere.

“Ours got broken. But I mean, that’s okay!” It didn’t matter that they were dead; they’d find a way to keep the promise. They had to.

“Well... I’ve been thinking. Really hard, actually. And I think I can get everyone out of here. I think... I think if I went home, I could get some of my friends to come back with me. Or maybe my foster parents. Or someone, y’know?” Callisto scratched their neck, brow furrowing with thought for a moment.

“You don’t need seven dead humans, right? And you’ve already got... You’ve already got four souls, right? If I just came back with my foster parents or a couple of my friends, there’d be seven. And then we can break the barrier.” Getting two people to help was a lot less daunting than six. Nodding to themself, Callisto let another small smile cross their face.

All they’d need is to get past Asgore. And from what everyone was saying... It wouldn’t be too difficult. Their plan might even sweeten the deal, for all they knew.

“I promise I’ll come back, so you can see the stars again. Maybe we could get another telescope! I had one before but I--I don’t have it anymore. But we could get a new one! And maybe Ian and Ellie would let me get some lab stuff for my room, so I can study some more stuff.” They were starting to get animated, not only excited to have a new friend, but also new ideas. There were a lot of things they’d been wanting to test. Of course, there weren’t a lot of people for them to bounce ideas off of; not since their parents died.

The abrupt question caught him off guard; for a second Gaster stared sadly at Callisto, hallow gaze brimming with an ancient sorrow and a yearning for the sky far, far, far above.

He directed his focus to cave ceiling then - gems glimmered in the midst of the yawning darkness, false stars for all of monsterkind to wish upon.

“Yes, Callisto. Long ago I lived outside on the surface.” At such reminiscence nostalgia stole over his melancholy. “My home was atop of a mountain. Not this one, but a range of snow-capped terrain. I could see the stars for miles everywhere.” His voice took to a dreamy chime. “When I was a child I tried to count the stars.”

He laughed - the sound lilted more morosely than happily.

“It was hopeless of course. Of the billions of stars I always lost count around six or seven hundred. But I loved to stargaze. The night sky is truly one of the most beautiful wonders of the worlds.”

The scientist smiled over at them for a second.

“During the war…I’d look up to the stars for peace. During trials or any rough times, really.” Gaster heaved a sigh, though a frown had yet to eclipse him. “I’d give nearly anything to see the stars again, dear young one.”

Echo flowers were not just beautiful; Callisto found that they smelled quite lovely as well. The scent stuck to their clothing like pollen, and when they left they’d find it hard to be rid of the pleasant smell. Not that they’d want to get rid of it.

Callisto marveled at the flowers for a long time, then, listening to the soft harmonies of echoes. They hadn’t heard that nickname in many years.

Letting out a quiet, appreciative sigh, Callisto trailed their fingers along the velvety, glowing petals again.

“Hey, Little Moon, you need some help with that?”

“Daaad, I got it! Hurry and get the door, we’re gonna miss it!”

Callisto stood up, brushing the dirt from their bottom absently.

“Dad! Dad come back out you have to see this! It’s starting!”

They suddenly felt very badly that the monsters down here couldn’t see the stars.

They wondered if Gaster had ever seen the stars.

“Hey, Gaster...?” Callisto started quietly, finishing dusting themself off and standing straight. “Have you ever seen the stars?”

It wasn’t as if they had pictures to show him if he hadn’t... But maybe, maybe if they talked to Asgore... Maybe Gaster--maybe no one--would need pictures.

Redolent fragrances wisped around the two. Motes of pollen wafted around their soft-spoken conversation, twirling slowly in the air like starlit dancers to the dulcet tones of their voices.

“… H o w  i s  y o u r  v i e w  o f  t h e  t w i n k l i n g  s t a r s  t o n i g h t  …?”

Tranquility cradled the moment and Gaster committed it to memory; every emotion to his heart, and every expression and word to his mind.

“…T h e y  s h i n e  j u s t  f o r  y o u , L i t t l e  M o o n …”

The nickname was nothing more than that to him, but at seeing Callisto’s reaction to it he thought it must hold a much deeper meaning to them. It was little more than a breath, those two words.

And Gaster wondered at the importance of that nickname, and he wondered how a child could be as entranced by the echo flowers as he was.
